I bought a NoMar manual tire changer about 10 years ago with the intent to start charging and changing tires locally. After the first 2 sets I changed, I said fuck this shit. I’ve changed plenty of my own sportbike, supermoto, dirtbike and atv tires without incident. Problem with people is they bring you a wheel set covered in dirt and grime and it’s their dirt and grime that scratches the wheel. I clean my wheels prior to any tire change, which prevents scratching.
As for the pictures in this thread from the OP, I can’t think of any reasonable excuse to hand off a set of wheels back to a customer looking like that.. that is the most obvious in your face fuck up for anyone with half a brain.

What’s with the 22” tubes for 18” wheels tidbit. I know nothing.

I understand that people make mistakes, heck I make a ton of them. I've also spent a lot of money/time only to be disappointed by someone doing something for me.
Having read through this thread, my take on this is: 1. That's a very obvious mistake and 2. Poor response from the "guilty" party.
What part of “I did it at night in the dark because my fluorescent shop lights are NFG” is unreasonable??
I wasn't gonna say anything past the "beans & frank" joke, but fukkit, since both parties have spoken and everyone else is pitching in their two cents I'll throw in mine...
This isn't your BFF applying a custom sparkly unicorn sticker to your trapper keeper and getting it a little crooked.
This is someone who is ADVERTISING (free of charge, btw) and CHARGING for a SERVICE on someone's MOTORCYCLE... as such it should require at least a modicum of professionalism... I am MORE than accepting of the fact that people make mistakes, but neither bad lighting nor ignorance is any excuse.
If I were NESR's Judge Judy the defendant would be making it right out of pocket and refunding all compensation. Case closed.

imho - mistakes or not, it should be remedied. eat the cost. Be honest about mistakes or lack of knowledge with a rimlock (plenty of youtube videos on this), and provide the courtesy of prompt communication. If you recognized the tube sizes were wrong, communicate that in advance, and consider sourcing the right size tube in advance of install and add it to the cost of the job and advising that it may have to be done twice if it doesn't fit properly. I'm not a master mechanic by any means, but that looks that should never have been delivered to the customer that way. Even if it's not for the quality of the work and service, it's somewhat of a liability issue if that caused him due harm to crash. If you can't afford good lighting for a shop (which honestly sounded like a cop out excuse) to inspect a bead, you shouldn't own a shop.
but for the OP: when I have a trip coming up, that I've taken time off work, spent thousands getting a bike setup, I don't try to nickel and dime small jobs. Just pay whatever it costs to get it done right so you can enjoy the trip. Source out the reputable shop in advance. If you're going to "try out" a "new" mechanic, do it when you don't need the work done on a time crunch. Give small jobs to start in the winter, and have them prove the quality of his/her work before trusting them with bigger jobs and have them earn your business. Unfortunately I've experienced "mistakes" and "they lost the part" and "oops, we forgot about you" and "I'm sorry he doesn't work here anymore" and "The number you called has be disconnected and is no longer in service" enough times to mainly distrust motorcycle mechanics. But once I find some good ones that do good quality work at a fair price, I give them plenty of time, buy parts through them, and actually pay them above their asking price if they're independents/small shops. Other services, I get so frustrated with poor quality work, high prices, long wait times and excuses, I consider doing myself. You seem mechanically inclined enough and you have many tire changing options; the rabaconda may also suit you over a HF tire changer.
@R7 - looking back, in 2011 I had the best tire changing experience in my life from you. You were courteous enough to invite me and trust me at your private backyard track, I brought my RM125 and we rode your loop, then you helped me mount an 18" tire on an FZR rim before I shipped the bike to SoCal. In retrospect, I appreciate that experience more and more. You're a good dude and take good care of your stuff and your friends. thanks again man!

ThanksI was just busting your balls a bit. I'd love to actually take you up on that offer but I don't have a dirty toy with a motor atm
My kid started asking for a dirt bike but she is still a little wobbly on a bicycle. When she is ready that is my excuse to get a new toy for myself.
Yup, kind of the same here. I bought that sweet Coats tire changer from a shop that was closing with the same intent. After a handful of tires I bailed and sold it. Nights & weekends waiting around for people to show up for starters. They'd have the tires shipped to me then show up ON their bike (not USUALLY the agreement back then). And as you pointed out, the wheels would be a mess. And of course, "while it's here" happened ALL THE TIME. Next thing I know not only am I swapping tires, but I'm R&R'ing wheels, changing brake pads, bleeding brakes, helping with sag settings, etc. Shit, I even had people show up with oil & filters and ask that I show them how to change their oil & shit. All the while I'd be led to believe we were just swapping tires with the wheels OFF the bike.
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?

I've said that to people before. Fuck CSI!
They're usually the ones who bitch about cost when you find something too. Dude, you brought a broken car and asked us to figure it out for you. Did you think the repair was gonna be Dollar Store prices?
I'll take the CSI hit and piss off the customer. Their business isn't worth it. Customer is always right is BS; sometimes they're just assholes. Actually had one manager agree and back me up when they bitched. Sadly, he was only one of many who think that way.

There are good deals gone bad, and there are bad deals gone worse.
Wheels and tires are essential safety equipment, and imo neither side of this transaction treated them that way.

For the record, no we don't. We bill in 10ths of an hour. So, that's six (6) minute increments. I wasn't gonna say anything until Pete pitched in his two cents past the "beans & frank" joke, so I said "fukkit" too.![]()

I think those 2 tires that had no rimlocks came out fine, no complaints about them. Your honor, if you would consider the cost of a 2 wheel job going for 2 bottles of $25 whiskey, financially it was not a bad deal for the plaintiff.
