Alright so I am at it again and I have a guy that wants to trade me a clean 01 FZ1 with some mods and about 14k miles straight up for my shadow. I have been kicking around a bike like that for a while but when I do research I find similar bikes for as low as $2500 to as high as $4500. More towards the lower end though and there are not a lot of them on the market. I know the Shadows range in the $3000-$5000 range but they seem to sell fairly easy in the range I am looking to sell mine at. Wondering if anybody here has any experience with the FZ1 values?
Thanks,
Randy
DEPENDS-what mods? ivans? holeshot? multigage? what?

Assuming your Shadow's stock and also an '01, IMO, you'd be stupid to pass that deal up if that Fizzy is clean....no wait, I mean....CLEAN!
Check out the classified section over at Yamaha FZ1 Owners Association (FZ1OA) to help you gauge pricing.
Where's the FZ located? If it's close enough I don't mind taking a trip to check it out to see how the mods were done.
14k is nothing for these motors...people have rolled 100,000 miles on these things.
I believe the bike is in Plymouth, MA. The guy has the bike posted for sale on those forums also. The only 01's I saw for sale on there were $3500 or less. The Shadow is an 01 with Cobra Pipes, Jetted and has Saddleman saddle bags so pretty much stock.
Here is the ad there.

Trade my Sport Bike for your Cruiser
I believe these are all the same bike. I might see about meeting up with him over the weekend to take a look at the bikes.
If thats the one I say fire away (but check it out first with some one that knows them) it LOOKS clean and is blue, which is the fast color

I just did a quick search of his posts on FZ1OA...He hasn't had it for very long.
EDIT: I"m an idiot
Well my Shadow is listed at $4500 obo and he was talking about a straight trade. I would not mind somebody that knows a little bit more about the bikes taking a look at it for me. I can judge condition very well but I do not know the value and mods of these bikes very well.
don't know much about the "values" as a typical price guide sees them, but that seems like a good deal. It's difficult to match a trade exactly, but this seems pretty close.
...not knowing you rjh, this may already be obvious to those who do...
but these two bikes are SO different, I can't help but wonder at your interest to change...
Was your fling with a Cruiser just an excercise to satisfy some inner curiousity and you have come to your senses? Or, have you always been a Cruiser guy, (your avatar suggests otherwise!), interested in testing the Sport Bike waters?
Just wondering!!!
It it were me, its a no brainer. I would trade the Shadow even up for the Fizzer so fast my Olympus Phantom suit would create its own Aurora...![]()

i had a 01 fizza (blue) and it was wicked pissa duuude.![]()
no really, a great bike i wish i still had. this is a no brainer to me but i'm not much on jap cruisers.
Hey Dave,
When it comes to motorcycles I have multiple personalities. I really do love all motorcycles and just riding in general and would love to have a garage full of bikes to satisy every whim. I can not seem to make up my mind on what I really want and I can't afford to keep multiple street bikes right now.
So to answer your question my interest has not changed, I am just playing around with other areas of the greater interest.
The problem I have with the trade is while the bike is something I am interested in and they have the same value by the books, the markets for both bikes are completely different. The FZ fills sort of a niche market and you have to find a buyer that knows and is really interested in the bike to get good value out of it, while the Shadow appeals to a much larger market so getting higher resale value won't be as difficult.
If all you have is that shadow
trade today and never look back

Yeah....but what does your heart say????
(...and don't pay any attention to me! I am impulsive and never make money on any transaction that I let my heart drive...and I would never let a decision about what I ride be driven by anything BUT my heart!!! ...but, that's just me! (I suppose any chance I might have of doing a deal on this board where I don't get raped has just been eliminated!!!))![]()

Why don't you counter offer? Example, ask for $500 plus his bike to trade? Doesn't hurt to ask.

How hard was checking the valve clearance?

Valve clearance was tit after the AIS was removed, melted down and made into bullets.Looks like we had our bikes apart at the same time...weird

It's really not that bad to get in there...the real tricky part was not scratching the black valve cover...which I ended up scratching anyway.
