+1 on it not being the roads fault. Until you re-look at the situation and find out why you went down then there is no way for you to learn from that mistake. And I can guarantee the mistake was not to ride on loose gravel in the first place. Unless you intended to go off the road, something you did (probably target fixation as I think thats many rookies' mistake) brought you off course.

Also if it hasn't been mentioned yet consider the MSF course in addition to the proper gear. Just to add to the list of advice, you may want to at least try and typing normal. It just has the tendency to bring upon negative feedback, your perceived as immature and uneducated based on how you sound. Its like walking around with the sticker left on your hat, the tags still on your shoes, and your belt by your knees. Its amazing at how far just sounding and looking educated will get you.

Sounds to me like he let off the throttle while on the loose gravel mid-turn. Can't do that... have to hold it steady and pray the rear wheel gets traction again.
