Front brakes chatter and makes a squeeeeeling noise just before coming to a complete stop. My R1 has 14K... pads never been changed. What's a good brand/type of pads to use for the street?
The only aftermarket pads I've had to use so far are EBC (HH rated) and I don't have any complaints, but I don't know if there are any better ones either. I asked around and asked the dealer the EBCs were the consensus.

I'll cast my vote for the EBC HH pads, too. in the past, I've tried their "green" pads, Ferodos... the HHs are the best I've used.
WWSD? (what would Sneakers do?)

I hope you ride fast, because HH pads need heat to work properly. Don't get me wrong, they are wicked good pads, but I run stock Honda pads on my RC51 for the street.
derek
I run EBC 'HH' on both my streetbike and racebike. As Degs stated, they need to be run hot to be truely appreciate the 'upgrade'. I knew that when I put 'em on my streetbike, but I went with 'em anyway. There was a definite improvement over stock, but the increase in braking was much more noticable on the racebike. None the less, I'll be sticking with 'em on BOTH machines...
But 14K miles and 'chattering' could mean you waited a bit long for the change. I've NEVER had stock front pads last more than 10K or so. In fact, I've hadta change 'em in as little as 5K. Be sure to make sure your rotors aren't warped...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
The rotors are in excellent condition. They're not warped. I got the bike at 9K from a guy that commuted from his home in southern NH to his business in Boston. Most of the 9K are highway miles with minimal brake usage. The bike still had the original tires on it when I got it and the back was squared off severly. The pads still have a little of meat left on them currently. Changing the pads should take care of the problem.Originally posted by Stoneman

1) Could you define 'chatter' a bit more? Be more specific...
2) Be sure to bleed or replace your brake fluid when you do the change...
3) Chances are you'll get more life outta stock pads...

Brake chatter as in the pads grabbing the rotor. This starts just a few feet before coming to a full stop. Also makes a high pitched squealing noise. It's caused by a build up of residue on the pads and rotors. A cleaning with brake cleaner will probably take care of it. I'm changing the pads cuz it's never been changed and it's got 14K miles.Originally posted by Stoneman

I changed the brake fluid a couple months ago. I'm just going bleed the system.
I'm not worried about the life expectancy of the new pads. I want something that works well. I'll give the EBC HH a try. If I don't like them than I'll switch to stock.
I just put the new HH pads in my bike, its still being placed together but right away I notice more friction on the rotors than the stock pads. I was told before the swap this would happen. Havent tested it out yet but I've heard some great things about the HH pads. If i get pulled over some time I'm going to tell them Degsy and Stoneman told me I had to go fast in order to get the best out of my brakes![]()
