I won't be able to teach the sportbike course until I get a few more classes under my belt.

I am looking forward to taking it this summer though.

    WEEK 1 UPDATE

Man.... you guys were right... it really IS like "boot camp"... LONG days (8a-6p) and it's pretty hard core.

We didn't get a chance to get out to the range as the weather didn't cooperate so we spent both days in the classroom thoroughly going over the material and doing a couple of mock-classroom scenarios. After going over the EXTENSIVE pre-course homework assignment, we "taught" the entire classroom part of the BRC to ourselves, doing a bit of a dry run a couple of times with each of us teaching a small part of the curriculum. Getting thrown into the fire like that was tough for some, but I think my classroom experience teaching for Tony's Track Days really helped me out as I had no problems being up in front of a class... my only concern was relating to the material & keeping in mind that these are going to be "pre-novice" riders, not track day enthusiasts. As long as I keep that last part in mind & stay within the time limit (tougher than it sounds) I think I'll be alright.

This coming weekend we'll be out on the range assuming there isn't any snow out there. Some of my fellow students are pretty anxious about that as most of us haven't been on a bike since last fall... lucky for me I got a chance to ride a few times through the winter. I'll be a little rusty, sure, but I don't think it'll take long to get back into the groove of things. After all, we're on little dinky 125's and 250's, not my big honkin Tuono. If the weather is ok this week I might jump on the T & head to a local parkin lot.

Just keep in the back of your mind....
99.99% of track day riders are there because they want to be.....
99.9% of MSF folk are ONLY there JUST to get a license.....

Well done..... jeez, I guess I did not pay Joe enough $'s to give you a hard time...

Yeah, TD students and MSF students are two VERY different breeds. Just remember; be accurate and to the point. Learn the key words/phrases and use them. Also, evaluate from head to toe.

Ok, I may have over exaggerated…a bit… Of course some are there to listen and learn…
The point I was (badly) tying to emphasize – Like Teaching Adult education vs. grade school, it takes a different style of teaching (coaching LOL….)
One “wants” to be there the other “needs” to be there…..the goals are ENTIRELY different, therefore….

Let's kick it up a notch.........can u Tell I am not a fan of MSF’s style…..: Far to Californian for me..... but it does serve a good need....

    I hear you...

Just to be clear, a track day is certainly not a substitue or replacement for MSF training... they all have their place ---but the goals & objectives are miles apart - nothing about $'s spent...

Congrats on the 1st week Pete! Then again, that's the easy week. It gets really hard next week.

My free advice, for what it's worth - on the range, RTFC and let 'em ride. It's amazing how much time can be wasted with helpful advice.

Know the eval points for the exercises and you won't have any problems either riding or coaching on the range. Limit your feedback to the most important point. Maybe two points if the rider reaches the end of the braking chute without the motorcycle.

Pete, tell Jack W. that "Tabby" says hi! I haven't had the opportunity to teach with him, but we got on pretty well when we would all be there for the first of the year instructor updates. Jack is probably tough, partly because he {and myself} come from the older, and some say more militant, previous curriculum. We were both taught by Bob Lavoie, and Ray Gaulin{from the Conn. MSF program}.
Yes, you are giving back to the motorcycle community. AND, yes you may meet lots of ladies. When I was involved, the state averaged 2/3 women to men. I met my sweety in 99, married her last January 08!!

Speaking of Jack, could you tell him to contact me? PM me for a phone #. I got the impression he doesn't do much email.

I'd like to get him a book. He asked me to set one aside, but I forgot, so there were no books left by the end of the update.

Nice bike Pete! With the ecomony as it is, I'd say you made the right choice. That Tuono was a real gas guzzler!

RCP gets a bit.... um tiring lol. I guess that's the best way to describe it. But once you teach that first class it's all worth it. My first class we had a lady in her early 30's (damn good looking too) come to the course. Never once ridden. By then test she was riding better than a few experienced guys. Best part was when she got her MSF card she cried!
