I got my new race helmet, now I'm looking to replace my race gloves. I used the Icon Timax last season and found them to be too bulky. Also a friend had a nasty crash in 1 with the same gloves and he hurt his hands really bad. I don't think they are a very good race glove.
What do the racers here use for gloves? And why?
Held Phantoms are great if you can afford them (they're 2fiddy). You can still find the Held Galaxy for short money because they are discontinued. I went down hard on my hands last year and they held up amazingly. They showed very little damage and I was able to continue using them. There are plenty of good brands out there, I just always make sure to buy gloves that are made from Kangaroo leather as it protects far better and the feel/feedback that you get is unbeatable.

Thanks, I've crashed with the timax's numerous times. They held up great for me. I mostly don't like them because they're bulky.
Ok Im not a racer by any means. however Im using Held galaxys. They felt a bit weird at first but are by far the best glove Ive had. One of my friends is running a huge discount on what he has left of them. 157 for a set but it appears he only has three sizes left. He also has discounted some of the other held gloves they have stopped making. Degsy has the phantoms and likes those but they are pricey.

I've had a set of A*'s GP Plus and GP Pro gloves. The GP Plus gloves formed a crease in the palm that turned into a tear after a season & 1/2, but they've redesigned them since. My GP Pro's are holding up very well. I'd buy either pair again. If you have a size medium hand you're welcome to try on my GP Pro's to see how they fit. They're a touch long in the fingers on me, but it doesn't affect feel or control. My only complaint is the way they feel in the wrist. Sometimes they "bind" a little, but I think that's just a fit issue. I haven't heard anyone else complain about that.

i'm in the same boat as you StupidHawk. i've got the Ti maxes as well. i can't complain, they've held up well for me (only one small crash really). though they are deffinatly bulky and i have heard some horror stories of guys crashing in ti maxes. i want to up grade but i'm not sure to what yet. i'm thinking about going with the GP pros. that pete mentioned
Yeah, I'm not buying until I try though. What dealers stock race gloves?
I have a pair of Held Phantom gloves that are really comfortable. They appear to have excellent protection (haven't tested them yet) and are not too bulky.
MotoMarket in Acton carries the Held line. I saw some Phantoms there last week.

Moto GP Nitrous are very rugged race glove.

At 80 bucks a pair, you can buy 3 to 4 pair for the price of high end Helds.
Their other gloves are not designed for racing.
I had a pair of Helds and did not like them ... gave them away to a friend
who started riding and he was using home depot leather gloves.
Check out Motophoria's gloves they are some good shit. I have had a pair for bout 5 years now and with regular applicatons of any lanlin based balm they will last a lifetime.

I bought my Held Galaxy gloves in 04 @ Seacoast Sport Cycle in Derry NH (The Aprilia/ Ducati shop on Rte 28). I'm not sure if they still carry them, but they are worth a shot

Paul, I found that the Nitrous run one size smaller than the RPM (second of the line gloves)
I normally wear large (motogp rpm) or 9.5 in Held
The MotoGP Nitrous, I would wear an XL for a snug fit.
Large is so tight that all the seams get printed on my hands.
I had to stretch them out by getting them soaking wet with hot water
and wearing them on a 3 hour ride.
i've got teknic speedstars. got them b/c i got an amazing deal on them. and ended up being impressed (originally thought i'd be using my old spidi's for racing). raced and crashed em last year. lots of padding. seem to take hits well. i was pretty skeptical about teknic stuff before i bought these, but i like em. these are the newer version of mine: Teknic Speedstar Gloves - Teknic Gloves - KneeDraggers.com (and i don't condone buying stuff from kneedraggers)

Just don't try to get black motogp nitrous gloves. They have been on backorder for over 2 months now. I think I'm gona have to settle with red ones.
+1 for Held...
I'lll probably buy a pair of Steve Golves when my Akira's wear out. They can be had for about $120.
I don't have any experience with this model, but NewEnough.com has the Held Ninja for $99... palms aren't Kangaroo, though. They're Pittards leather which is great stuff, I just don't think it feels as good as the kangaroo.
