I know this kind of thread has been posted tons of times before, but it's different for every rider just what is good for them.
So here goes..
Was just checking out the Suzuki SV650 at Suzuki's website. Any other good ones you can think of?

Yamaha FZ-6(positive ratings all over the place)
Honda Hornet 599(too much money for what you get though)
Stay naked!
2021 KTM Duke 890 R
2020 BMW R1250GS Adventure Exclusive
1982 Honda CB750F Super Sport
EX250's, GS500's, and EX500's are always popular choices.
I started on (and still own) an 87 EX500. Great bike. Easy to ride, easy to work on (compared to a modern sportbike), cheap to buy, easy to sell. All those should apply to the 250 and the GS as well...There are a good number of these bikes on NESR...
I really like the look and the "feel" of a SV650... have sat on RandyO's SV and it just felt right for my height and stature. I can hold it up, rock it between my legs and so forth so I thought it would be a good fit and a good way to start riding.
Can't lose with an SV, in my opinion...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
Ninja EX500 would probably work well for you then. They an not bad on power and they go for a little more than $4,500 new(without deals or sales). Very affordable new or used. I have an older 750R and love it.

SV's have only been out since 99, used ones are usually $3500 + and new they are just under $6k . I would even suggest something as big as a Nighthawk 750 .. you should probably be looking at nekid standards, good riding ergonomics, no plastic to damage, , generally cheaper to own.

my girl started on a gs500 and moved down to a ex250 ., and is now on a SV on the track ,..
so ex250 or gs500 are both great starters ...
women ??!!

Ninja ex250 (also called 250R), Ninja ex500 (500R), or Suzuki gs500...from what you said before I'd stick with the 500s

just couldn't resist whoring myself out some more-
I'm sure somebody will be looking for a nice beginner's bike this spring,

I have an SV now- and I love it!! Good luck in your search
If you decide on an SV. Go, right now, to the SRNE website (www.sportriders.com) and check out the reduced price SV in there. $2900 for a 2000 with a clean title and only about 8k on it. It's such a sweet deal I almost abandoned my SV650S dream for it. The guy is hot to sell it after a recent birth. It's out in East Brookfield, Mass. Clean title, never dropped or raced. DEFINITELY worth a look as this is the best deal of the year.
And, no, I don't know the guy, i just want someone to buy it so I can stop wanting it!

I would think, that at 5'-11"..a ninja 500 would be too short for her...............but then im biased anyway, i LUV my sv!________5_________
I miss ya Beet....ya Git!
I'm 6'1" and never felt cramped on my EX at all. The 6R is much worse, higher footpegs, lower bars...sure it's got a higher seat but all that does is make it harder to walk around.Originally posted by fivetoez
