Is it just me, or do people around here not seem to understand the helmet tap (or head tap, since some do not wear helmets)? I've had to warn a few people lately, and they always give me this retarded "dyuh, look'a' me! I kan ride ma moto'cykl!" kinda look. Do they think I'm just saying hello, or saluting them?
On the cutting edge of mediocrity.
...when I tap on my helmet i spontaneously say 'Who's there?'

When leading a group I use the helmet tap to warn the people in my group. Bikes that go by in the opposite direction I use a "slow down" motion with my hand, people usually understand that.

I use it, but I also think many riders do not know what it is. My riding 'buddies' sure do though! (one of em even thinks it means drop 2 gears and nail it)
I understand the helmet tap but what if they are rubbing their stomach in a circular motion with the other hand ???
here is Hondarider102 (Corey) using it on one of our rides

i actually think the cop i was pointing to was 2 cars in front of me, but maybe it was that guy, i don't remember
