Helmet tap, anyone?

Is it just me, or do people around here not seem to understand the helmet tap (or head tap, since some do not wear helmets)? I've had to warn a few people lately, and they always give me this retarded "dyuh, look'a' me! I kan ride ma moto'cykl!" kinda look. Do they think I'm just saying hello, or saluting them?

When leading a group I use the helmet tap to warn the people in my group. Bikes that go by in the opposite direction I use a "slow down" motion with my hand, people usually understand that.

I use it, but I also think many riders do not know what it is. My riding 'buddies' sure do though! (one of em even thinks it means drop 2 gears and nail it)

I thought the helmet tap was a pretty universal thing. Like putting your left hand up means that you're taking a right hand turn...or swearing to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I just started looking when u did it and couldnt tell ....but we were coming into a populated area ... that may not have been a cop but from a distance it looked like a unmarked ford 500.
