haha you're probably right.
as far as legit advice, use the search function on this site.... look for riding technique and newbie advice....theres a ton of good info on here for riders of all levels.
there are also a number of MSF instructors on here that would be more than willing to share their knowledge.
I can't be the only one who immediately thought of this picture when I saw that:

Welcome Jennay.
I am also a new rider and I live in Belmont, not too far from the Alewife T/Fresh pond area. My boyfriend and I often go out on our bikes on the weekends, you're welcome to tag along sometime. He's been riding for several years and is very helpful. My brother also rides and goes with us sometimes.
The guys on here are crazy, but very amusing.![]()
Yup, this is my first bike. I went on a ducati monster (not sure of the size) this summer as a passenger, and I fell in love with being on a bike. So I got my learner's permit, took a bike course, got my license, and bought the F650. I ordered it a month ago, and it just arrived home this past Saturday.
I've only ridden it once on my own so far, and another time as a passenger. I need to have someone take it to a parking lot where I can practice for a few hours before I'll feel more comfortable in my neighborhood - I love living in the city, but it has definitely cramped my practicing over the past few days. Luckily the dealership where I bought it (Greater Boston Motor Sports in Arlington) has been AWESOME. Barry, the manager, took me for a ride on the bike the day it came home, and offered to have someone from the shop take me out again this weekend for a lesson. So hopefully by next week I'll be in better shape.
I do think that the size is fine for me, and I solicited A LOT of advice on this issue before making the purchase. I feel very comfortable with the weight of the bike, and I'm able to bounce it from side to side no problem, thanks to being so tall. It was also interesting to realize that need to use WAAAAY less throttle than I did on the little 250's and 100-somethings that I road in the bike course. So far using the clutch to control the bike's speed seems a lot easier than using the throttle, but I'm sure with more practice it will all be one in the same. I keep telling myself that this is just like learning to play a new video game - I'm not a big gamer or whatever, but I've played my fair share of Mario Brothers, FZero, etc. - at first on a new game the commands feel all awkward and foreign, but after awhile it becomes intuitive. I can't wait until my muscle memory adapts and the bike feels like it's just an extension of me, that's gotta be amazing.
Hey!... SMF lives in Arlington...:
