hit send too quick
at speeds your talking about, I think rider aerodynamics can make a big difference, cages have real low drag numbers compared to bikes even though they may have larger frontal area,

I've driven an M5 on a few occasions. It was beyond any car I've driven before. It is a very easy car to drive really fast, particularly on a highway. It has some heft to it but on a highway it's pretty much point and shoot. I've never ridden a large sportbike so I can't compare it, but yeah I could see getting whipped by a aerodynamic 400HP car (what are the new ones up to now, 500?)

Yep, and in alot of cases owners like to keep their cars as OE looking as possible while adding a little bump under the hood.Originally posted by RandyO
no matter how fast you are, there will always be a car faster
Either something is wrong with your bike or you need a RR Kit because a 954 should pull easily on even modified M3's.
Sounds like your 954 is having some issues. My old 954 would go right to redline in 6th. I have still pics from a friends 954 with the speedo indicating 186 (pretty sure it was 186 or whatever the speed limiter is set to).
You should check your air filters if they are still original.
Don't forget to get into as tight of a tucked position as you can. You have to reduce as much wind drag as you can.
I used to be able to hit 134 in 3rd gear on the 954 (at Loudon) just as it would hit the limiter. You should have more than 20 MPH left with the last 3 gears.
Visit www.1000RR.com and check out the 954 forum there. We have a bunch of guys with 954's there that should be able to help you sort out the power problem
Dang! You got shocks, pegs... lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?
152 indicated (say, 140 real MPH) is waaaay off and sure indicates a huge problem. your only making 95 RWHP or so. May wanna rethink that slip on pipe. Sounds like maybe it's leaning out on top.
really? wow! i bet you need a lot of space to get up to 180mph.Originally posted by By-Tor

Even if that M3 had a turbo you should have wasted him... and stock they are limited to 155mph, like that matters though. From a stop you'd practically be out of sight before he'd catch you, you must have been running at high speeds for a LONG time. Cars do have an aerodynamic advantage but sedans & couples like the M3 are the absolute worst shape for high speed, think a hatchback shape or something with a fat ass like a Vette or F430 for good high speed aerodynamics.
This is a dumb game though, you should go check out the scene up at epping if you are into straight line racing.![]()

Fastest I've EVER been able to get any BMW I've driven up to (and I've driven the entire line and the most seriously modified cars(think 550 HP turbo M3) at ludicrous speeds) was a GPS indicated 165. And unless the BMW is really tricked out for just top end speed (a sweet quaiffie diff or the like) none will go faster then that. That said, your bike should have smoked any M3.
see these pics for my BMW street cred. tee hee!
I would be looking into getting your bike on a dyno and finding out whats going on... PCIII probably the best bet + dyno tune + a nice full system + sprockets to get the most fun/bang for buck out of your bike, but you're probably talking something like $1500 bux.
But when we ride very fast motorcycles, we ride with immaculate sanity. We might abuse a substance here and there, but only when it's right. The final measure of any rider's skill is the inverse ratio of his preferred Traveling Speed to the number of bad scars on his body. It is that simple: If you ride fast and crash, you are a bad rider. If you go slow and crash, you are a bad rider. And if you are a bad rider, you should not ride motorcycles.
I would start with a compression test.Originally posted by hohum

the zx10r is a beast, handles like its on rails, and it won best superbike of the year the last 2 years. In a straight line the busa and zx10r are almost dead even (the 10r is at least 100lbs lighter). In the twisties forget about it, the 10r cant be beat. As you can tell i love mine.
oh yeah and orange is the way to go.![]()

Man WTH don't these bozos do their top speed runs during the day.. the crap headlights on that bike are probably only safe up to 55mph or something.
I think the speedo was jumping cause his rear tire was hopping/losing contact?
Just found a 954 video from the same crew.

Have you ever been on the Northern State, Southern State, or the Clearview in NY? You'd be lucky to go 60mph through trafficOriginally posted by benVFR

They do their runs at 3 in the morning when there is no traffic.
Disclaimer: I don't condone this kind of riding..........

as far as the performance issue goes VS the M3.... remember that heat & humidity definitely doesn't help your performance. On top of that, the new e46 M3 is a freakin powerhouse that's built for top-end speed. Its 1/4 mile time is irrelivant in this situation as it's NOT drag car, but a top end speed car. an e46 M3 WILL stay with an M5 from a highway roll-on till around 130mph, and both will accelerate past 150 relatively easily.
with that said... when you say "i topped out at 152" do you mean you just rolled off or you couldn't accelerate past that? i know on my bike that i can bring 5th gear up to redline pretty easily & see somewhere around 150 indicated if i'm not mistaken... last time i saw speeds like that was at VIR though so i wasn't really paying attention to the speedo.

wow did i see 181 on that 954 video? that was crazy. do you think my bike should be capable of that? i only have a d&d slip on, everything else is stock. im going to change out my air filter tomorrow, any suggestions on a brand. oem, K&N etc... do you think that a dirty air filter could cause that much of a difference in power? were taliking about 30 mph between that guy in the video and what i got, and i was on it. throttle pinned in 5th and 6th for a good stretch of highway.

if you were bringing it to redline & couldn't accelerate past 150 then i'd say there's somethin wrong & it's not making full power. my 600 can take me past that w/o too much trouble.

you guys are all talking "indicated" speeds with the exception of anyone using a GPS speedos are at least 10% off, meaning reading higher than you are actually going, so if 154 is indicated than 140 is about actual and your bike should go faster than that.
i saw 160+ on the dial on a friends 954 race bike down the straight at firebird in phoenix and the straigh is about half a mile long![]()

speedos at least 10% off? I hardly think so, as much as 10% off yes, but usually less, and a lot of speedos that are off 10% at say 60-75mph are more accurate at higher speeds cause of tire expansion

i just ordered a new air filter. im going to be taking a look tongith while im at work to see how dirty the current one is. the new one wont be here until thursday. does anyone know if riding my bike with the dirty filter will harm it in some way other than a decrease in power, i dont want to hurt my baby

tire expansion doesnt mean shit if your speedo is run off the front sprocket
