Rest assured 6, I don't think he'll make that mistake again. I think, like many of us, a bike that has been raced or set up for the track shouldn't have those kinds of issues. He's paying dearly for that now, and has taught us all a little lesson.

A brake line that rubs the tire under braking has to be pretty wrong, not a common easy over site.
And to answer your first question, it was a race bike, has been for years, its all safety wired etc... so i think i would have been confident in the bike, now after seeing this incident i would be more careful and go through a bike before i rode it.

Was this the ducati that was for sale?
Understandable, i don't think any of us expected this to happen, he did say he wished he had gone over the bike and did say he made a mistake in not but with it being a race bike in all i see where he felt confident in the bike.

And this was a ducati 800ss that he just bought, ha had a ducati 748 for sale

both ducati's so i see where your mistake came from

Just saw this post, sorry to hear man.
Shoot me a PM if you think you can use a stock throttle from my 848.
I got the throttle cables as well....I need to dig it up to see what I have.
I use an aftermarket throttle and cables so all the stock stuff should be there.
I'll give it to ya cheap if you can use it for a repair.
Heal up bro. Hope you feel better soon.

It would have to be a situation of complete disassembly or perhaps long-time ownership for anyone to notice something like that.

That is a pretty major technical oversight.
First and foremost. Never worked on the bike. Bought it "ready to ride". But thanks for making a comment about something you know nothing about. I did give the bike the once over and didnt see Anything wrong with the brake line as it did sit OVER an inch away from the tire with the bike stationary. Your right. You know nothing of me or my work but all the write ups that have appeared on Nesr have been positive about my attention to detail. I do take pride in my work. I blame noone for this incident but myself because noone else is at fault but me. I should have secured the line even with the distance it showed already. I took the laws of physics for granted and it bit me In the ass. Lesson learned. Damn sure won't happen again and I'm pretty sure I've added something on to most racers checklists not to mention tech personel.

    Re: My first highside..... :-(

Okay, since tech inspection has been mentioned more than once I'm going to say this:

The chances of Tech Inspection catching something of this nature are slim to none as TI looks at overall requirements and the general safety condition of the machine rather than particulars such as scrubbed brake lines.

This is not directed toward anyone in particular when I say this but Tech Inspection does no exist to build your machine for you. Tech Inspection exists to ensure that the machines meet all required critera for a given organization and to ensure that the criteria is done in a safe and reliable manner.

I say with confidence that these statements go both for trackdays and racing.

I don't think that is the same bike. Scottie Had it, Sold it to me and I sold it to Tony. I actually think It was Tony's before it was Scott's.

I THINK the one Bergs is talking about was a different bike Scottie had after I had sold the 800 to Tony.

My point was Shit Happens and I wouldn't question someones repair ability on one incident (especially coming from someone that has equipment issues as much as 6 )

Bergs. I was in no way knocking you tech guys. Was only saying that this incident just opens evryones eyes to the details that can be sometimes overlooked even by professionals like myself. Sometimes it's the things you wouldn't think twice about that come up and bite you In your ass when least expect it. Just lke Cory said. He and oxx and half squid didn't even know that the brakes caused the issue until I comeback from the ambulance and said I'd lost my brakes. Even then it took crawling around on their knees to find the chaffed line. Again shit happens. Such is life.

Scary enough brakes are one of the things that are often over looked. Whether its line routing or bleeding or just setting the pads. Yours isnt the first Ive seen where the line has been worn through by the tire. When you come back to the shop for your bike Ill show you what I did on my race bike. Maybe it will help out in the future.

Never once did I question the intent of your statements, Rich. I simply don't want other people reading into anything that's being said here and thinking that Tech Inspection is responsible for every aspect of their motorcycle.

If you wanna talk about experienced technicians overlooking details, ask me about the pistons in my race motor.

Mistakes absolutely happen and, I've said this before, any technician who has never made a mistake has never actually tried to work on anything.

Jim doesn't need brakes anyway. You have to get out of second gear in order to really need them.

    in that case...i blame Doc.
it took clay and i few minutes to find the source of the problem since it was on the bottom of the crossover line. clearance really would have been a non issue if it had a regular fender on it. the fender stopped at the forks though and didnt extend toward the back of the tire.
rich, either get dual lines or if you go back to that set up get a full fender
