i was recently promoted at work. my promotion comes with a "demo" bike. that means i pick a bike, they "sell " it to me and i ride it for the season. i am responsible for insurance, registration and maintenance.
in NH your vehicle registration renews on your birth month. this is where i get robbed.
my birth month is march. demo bike allocation doesnt usually happen until april
i went down to the town hall today to see how much my "free" bike was gonna cost to register. then i ask the question. "do i get a refund when i dont have this bike in 6 months?" (to be fair, i asked my insurance company this and they replied with "absolutely")
"no" was the answer. "but you can transfer them to another vehicle" well as you can see from the data ive supplied to you, by the time i know what my bike will be, the plates will be expired and therefor saves me $0 on the new registration.
so im going to fork out $400+ to register a vehicle that i wont have in 6 months and the will essentially get to keep $200+ of my registration money.
there should really be an option for 6 month motorcycle registration. i cant seem to find any loop hole that gets me out of paying for a full year, unless i can somehow register it to someone else whos birth month is in november or december

It costs $400 to register a bike in NH?
I see your point. But $400 to ride a brandy new bike all summer? Suck it up, cupcake...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?

Be thankful yer birthday didn't hit you for a 16 month registration, I got hit pretty big for the first registration on my Kymco last year, I'm used to 20 year old vehicles like my Jeep

I'd make fun of you but if I was in the same situation, I'd complain too![]()
generally, no, annual registration in NH comes in 2 parts, town tax, and state registration, you are required to show proof of town tax at the state dmv or many town offices process both town and state fees, town tax is based on original MSRP and drops every year, once 10 years old (± not sure exact age) the town tax stays constant, state portion is based on weight class and type of vehicle
iirc, back in 07 when my Vstrom was new, it cost me $275± to register first year, now it's less than $50/yr
beware, new policies on vanity plates in NH

In MA, we pay $20/year. But then we pay yearly 'excise' tax, and a sales tax when first registering it. In NH, they avoid the sales tax, and I don't think they have the excise tax either. I bet the total cost is roughly similar. I thought RI was about the same.
For example: $8k bike in MA = $20 + $25*8 = $220/yr. Then $500 for sales tax up front. Lets say you own the bike ten years, that was $50 per year of divided sales tax. Total given to state is now $270/yr.

Congrats on the promo and the $400 bike.
Yes, NH taxes and fees are ridiculous. Nobody should ever move here. They'll tax you back to the stone age. $400 on a >$20,000 brand new Harley is obscene.
I mean, they are into me for $37.50/yr for my DRZ nowadays. Those schwingbags!

I know in Vermont that we have a 90 day grace period to take the tax credit and transfer registration to a new or different vehicle after the sale of the old one.
Maybe NH has something similar ?

Come to Connecticut, we get taxed for everything and we're still broke
Just refuse the free bike from work. Problem solved.

yes, i am fully aware that my total cost to ride this bike for a season is roughly $1000 and that its a good deal. just irked that the state is keeping half of my registration money regardless of amount.

Write your local elected official. Just to try and make them aware of the situation. It wouldn't be that crazy for them to allow refunding prorated portions of registration when cancelled. I realize it'll probably go no where, but if you're pissed about it, at least you tried.
