Howdy doody.

Being on the outside is my preference and I even find myself telling my own competition that (cause I'm such a nice guy or I just don't know any better). I go right for the wall and let everyone else bunch up so that I can cut 'em off at turn one. It also seems like there is less chance for personal disaster or involvement with one. My philosophy is get out and check out. I really don't want anything to do with most of the pack. The biggest challenge is just getting yourself lined up right when you have slackers still coming to the line and messing up what you just thought was a great starting position.Originally posted by Lucky13

LOL. I was snowboarding with Jay & Nazo at Killington this weekend and they mentioned it to me and that someone called me a line jumper and said I was slow. All I could do was laugh and I just had to check it out for myself.Originally posted by a13x

First of all, all the commentary and self-promotion on the google video site is a complete joke. I mean, seriously. I'm comparing my "surgical precision" at Loudon to MotoGP.Originally posted by benVFR
He's going to jinx himself tooting his own horn like that, looks like he only ran a 1:25 or so on his second lap.
He probably just got a great start or maybe jumped the flag and didn't get caught? Hell he may have gotten caught and you just can't tell from the video?
I ran a 1:21 and this was my 5th race ever at the Loudon circuit and I never set foot on the track before May 14th-15th weekend which was also a rain race and scared the hell out of me since I only had my dot race tires. I tip-toed around the track to 9th in the rain and also took a 4th place in MWSbk the day before in my 2nd race after 3rd in the rookie race and 9th in my first actual race. The June 11-12th weekend I went 3, 1 , 2 then came back the following weekend for nationals and went 1, 1, 1, 1. This was the novice class and I did protest being put in it but I was told rules are rules so I said ok, and just went out there and got comfortable with the track.
I didn't jump the flag/start. It's hard to see in the small format I published but I don't move till that flag goes in the air. The second I see his arm move I am gone. I raced motocross and off-road for a while so I am pretty good with flag and starting gate starts.

Again...I was only joking.Originally posted by benVFR
I meant the second lap.. not the first one. And it was only a guestimate because the video fades out on the final straight. But he was at 1:18 or so just getting out of the final corner.
It's just the general idea of being careful how much you brag. But what do I know, MC racers seem to love to boast, maybe it is required to keep your head in the game.
Lap 1 was a 1:23.9 and lap 2 was a 1:21.9
I'm also not much for bragging. I enjoy helping and talking with people more than anything. But I wouldn't be the first to put my foot in my own mouth. After busting balls on some other race peeps about their crash filled season I proceeded to dump myself on my head at near 1:16 trying to pass an R1 for 2nd in th UN SBK race. Kinda learned my lesson there! Oh well.....
So how fast you think you can get that VFR around the track Ben? I bet I could break 1:20 on it. Care to see me try? I assume no liability for my actions.

Thanks for all the nice words Jay. You and your crew are a bunch of stand up guys and it's people like you that make racing and the track such a fun place to be. Nothing like having fun and hanging out with great people.Originally posted by hessogood
It's not really boasting, when you're racing you know when you're doing something right and when you're not. And when you nail a corner, or a start, or a pass just right....well, you know you did it just right, and it's a great feeling.
Hell, we don't just go on and on about what we do right, we tell stories about our crashes and how we screwed up just as much if not more!
Sampson is a great rider and racer though. he's also an instructor for Team Promotion. Maybe rookie of the year.

Not too long after that I got my doors blown off by jeff wood and scott greenwood during practice and I followed them briefl but long enough to learn how to turn 6 & 7 into one big sweeping turn.
I only wish I had the video of Jay getting spit off in front of me in turn 6 from the same weekend. I took it off my server but he may have it still. If not I can always load it back up.

The $3500 in extras was only bodywork, rearsets, a rear shock that I had problems with all second half of the season and fork springs that I could never get the sag right on. The only perfomance stuff was a slip-on and velocity stacks. The velocity stacks made the most notable difference in the torque/power curve and delivery.Originally posted by a13x
His CBR600 had over $3500 in extras.
Eric seems a nice guy and had a good year racing.
ps: Getting killer holeshots wasn't all that hard in Novice. That was probably the biggest difference I noticed from Novice to Amateur. Guys were better at starts.
I'd like to think I'm a nice guy ;-)
Pulling holeshots in novice wasn't the toughest but remember, every race I was in last place and in the last string of races, Santos and I were both running 1:19's. I was also on a bone stock bike with NO suspension work. At the end I was pretty scared that front end was just going to go away on me in turn 9 or 2.
When I moved to the AM class it was the same deal. I got stuck in the last row but still managed great starts and managed a 2nd in MW SBK and like 5 4th place finshes and some 5ths as well. And most of the people that beat me started in the front row with the exception of 1 or 2. I'm hoping with pre-registration for next year I will be a bit more competitive to the finish since it will erase that starting time gap. The biggest difference with the Am guys is that everyone is more consistent to turn 1 and could carry that to turn 3 but everyone starts to get pretty sorted after that.

You can practice starts every lap if you want. You can even do stop-go-stop-go several times down pit out to turn 1.Originally posted by OreoGaborio
speaking of starts, are you allowed to practice that in hot pit?
If you are going to practice starts at the start of practice, best thing to do is put your hand up as you come to a stop to let everyone know what you're up to and go to the right side of pit out.
Biggest challenge to a good start is launching hard and keeping the bike straight while not letting off the gas. The front wheel doesnt need to be on the ground but you've gotta keep going straight. I reccomend a trip to the drag strip for test & tune night if you are serious about getting better starts. Dirtbikes are good practice too as long as you don't dump the clutch and minimize the wheel spin since you wont get away with that with sticky dot rubber.
