No Dan is right... Should be leaning more frontward into the tank. You pretty much want to be up and off to the side of your tank. Watch the pro's when they ar at full lean, you'll see!Originally posted by gixxer6

Just to be sure, you guys realize, that the better your positioning when hanging off the less lean angle you'll need for the corners. I haven't gone through this whole thread but the best way to work on this stuff is to ride. Parking lots are probably tougher and won't so much help you on the track or on the twisties, you're eyes aren't going in the right direction and you're not really taking a line, you're just laying the bike down. The best practice I get is is to follow someone who rides better than me, someone who's riding you trust and mimick them. I also have a roadracing video that shows a lot about upper body positioning if either of you want to borrow it. Rotorys and off ramps are great to get a good tight corner down and drop your knee, just have to find a time when there's light traffic and still good visability.

Sure..basically, when I was having issues with my technique, Dan told me to step on the inside peg more and that would make the bike turn harder and faster..he also said to pull my elbow in and drop my inside shoulder. This, I think, puts you further up front on the bike for one, and also improves the speed in which the bike will want to corner. Not to be mistaken with cornering speed... Dan can explain it MUCH better, but I believe this to be the underlying philosophy of it. I know that when Dan and the other guy's do it, they look real smooth throughout the entire corner..especially in turn 1, 3, and 6. If you're still scratching your head..PM Dan.
Danny Boy..Where are ya? I need help explaining here bro!!!

IMHO this is a MUCH better place to practice this than off ramps and other streets. You can definitely pick a line in a parking lot. Even riding in a circle is good practice.
one critique: You aren't turning your heads! Impressive that you can drag a knee without looking where you are going.In a parking lot where there are no visual obstructions you should be turning your head pretty much as far as it will go, looking way u the inside of your arc.
I'd say go back out there and practice more! Here's a good example of form...

Thanks, yeah we had no problem picking lines, even did a little follow the leader. RUnning wide doenst become a costly mistake, but we are aware when we do so. We may even bring cones next time.Originally posted by Paul_E_D

As for the head thing, yeah i hate myself for it every time i dont do it. Trying hard to change that.
Thanks Paul..These guys have it down, they just need a little refinement, thats all...You boyz are on your way!!! Bravo!!! But yeah, what Paul said...turn your heads more and it'll flow smoother..

The head turn will help a lot. If you just train your eyes to look to the exit or as far towards it as your line of site will allow, your head should follow. If you look at the pics, you're head is lined up verticle to the horizon, gotta try to have it lined up with your bike and the rest of your body.
Are you sure about putting the weight on the inside peg? Keith Code's second book says you need to get your weight on the outside peg as much as possible. If you follow the physics of it, this will give you much better traction, as the inside peg will give you the reverse effect.
ya I was....wieght on inside peg and grip tank with outside knee.. The whole looking thing I do fine on the street and track...it was a littel harder for me to look that far ahead so I picked a spot closer the bike so it was easier to focus on..Originally posted by hessogood

Also, this was strictly to get used to touching the knee down....I have only been to the track one weekend..peguin, practices and 2 races(including the rookie race) and only got my left knee down twice(#2) and right once(#3 followed by a low side) .... I still have a long way to go...Next time I'll work more on the tips you guys have given...
it's alot to absorb. Concentrate on improving one technique at a time and when you feel comfortable with it move on to refining the next. I'd recommend reading keith codes books a couple times. Even though I know some people on here don't like them, I got tons of great info from them.
Hmmm... I think you want to try to keep your head vertical to the horizon. If you tip it with the bike, banked turns will become very disorienting. The turn in the pic I posted is the perfect example. If I don't "level" my head with the horizon, I'd have to look straight UP to see through the turn!
The peg weighting issue is a hotly debated topic. I have found it works both ways, as long as you weight the pegs and not the seat you are doing OK.
It is true that you can counter steer easier by weighting the outside peg, as well as increase traction in some situations, however these techniques don't seem to be used by all fast guys. Many talk about weighting the inside peg, many don't know exactly what they do... It's worth trying both tactics and figure out what affect they have.
try it, your bike will "fold" around the corner. It's something that you will do insticntively if you corner fast and hard enough; it draws the bike to the inside of the turn.Originally posted by bigred875

I use it on the track to alter my line through a corner, to pass another rider.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your ass should be up toward the tank at the apex, this puts weight on your front and locks it to the ground.
I push my ass all the way back, almost up on the rear cowl right before braking, then under heavy braking, allow myslef to be drawn up and to the side, completeing the move right before the apex.
Leaving the corner, I am to the pin, if she starts to swap rear for front, I stand the bike up straight beside me. As she settles, I pull myself back up into the sitting position.
