If your only choice is to ride it back with your old plates you can do it, just BE CAREFUL not to get pulled over. Driving up and back twice just to go to the DMV sounds pretty lame. You could always have the guy mail you the paperwork - you mail the check, get it all certified or use a proxy service to make sure no one rips each other off... always good to be prudent, but, it's not like you're going to be riding the thing across country. You'll have the bill of sale from that day in your hand, I tend to think most cops would give you the benefit of the doubr, especially if the plates were from your other bike and still live...
As a blissfully ignorant youth I rode around for years with no paperwork on old plates from other bikes. Only bit me in the ass one or twice after getting pulled... key is, don't crash or get caught speeding. It's actually good practice, forces you to focus even more.
If you need a ride, you should post and someone might step up. If my wife wasn't about to give birth any minute I'd give you a hand, but she is.

I'm going with my dad , finally he agreed to come with me. I guess I'm gonna give a deposit on saturday and pickup on sunday or something. Real pain in the ass to drive there and back.

edit : Nevermind , called up and they said they can't tell me the title of the vehicle with out showing proper ownership . . . WTF , lol how am I suppose to know if this bike has a clean title now . . .
