I brought my bike on campus this past weekend so I can commute to my local job. I had a feeling this could turn out to be problematic, but I didn't realize it would happen on the SECOND night it was here.

This morning I went up to the parking deck where my bike was to get the registration out of it so I can pick up a parking decal. I walk up the stairs, and looking across the deck over other cars I can see the familiar profile of my bike's windshield. Only something wasn't quite right - that big SUV certainly looked to be parked a little too close. Thinking it was just a perspective issue, I walked up to it to find out that sure enough, someone had picked up my bike out of the parking spot (they couldn't have rolled it since the forks were locked) and placed it on the yellow line between two spots.

Yes, I was grateful that no damage was done to the bike, but why would anyone think this is ok? Why do people have the mentality that just because it's a motorcycle, it doesn't have a) the right or b) the necessity (because I would get a ticket) to park in a full spot. When I went to Campus Police to get my parking decal, I told them about this to see what they could do as far as offering my solutions to park in a different spot that would be more motorcycle friendly (I even told them of a marked-off 2 foot no parking spot in the deck that would be perfect since I could chain my bike to a pipe right there) only to be told "That sucks, but you have to park in a spot". This person was unbelievably useless though as he couldn't even tell me WHERE on the bike I had to put the parking sticker.

So yeah, I'm frustrated and don't know what to do. I want to just quit my job and bring the bike home at this point.

Similar thing happened to me my first day of havin my bike at school way back when. What did I do? Parked it in front of my on-campus apartment on the walkway. But then the drunk girls would all be tryin to sit on my Ducati. I don't mind drunk girls, but at Western New England College, if a drunk girl straddles anything you own, you best get the bleach out to disinfect the victimized goods.

College isn't a good place to have something that you care about. Most people at college are given cars worth 12x the value of our bikes, so they don't care about other people's shit, no matter how hard you work for it.

Bring it home man, it's not worth the risk unless you have a place you can stash it.

I park my bike at college in the heart of boston, I put an alarm on it with a proximity sensor. Keeps people away, especially being right next to a big dorm. The alarm keychain sounds off if the alarm goes of and tracks how many times and what sensors, and what time it went off. The warning beep has gone off a few times but the alarm hasn't been activated once in 2 weeks.

1) You don't know the SUV did it. May have been in your spot, but it may have been an earlier a$$hole who was the initial culprit, and the SUV was unluckily at the scene.

Doubt it... But no sense jumping to conclusions.

2) Now though I never condone violence for legal reasons I can say I have heard of a few vehicles who have done similar things that have obscene words carved in the doors, hood, etc.

Simpler still... Amazing what throwing a bucket of antifreeze on to a car will do to a paint job in general.

Again, not that I personally have any knowledge of such actions.

Don't bring anything you care about to college unless you want to watch it like a hawk. Too many people are too spoiled or jealous to respect what you have.

My roomates and I solved the problem with our off campus apartment by taking trap and skeet for our PE electives. Three days a week the rodents in the neighborhood saw us load shotguns into the back of the cars. All the other aprtments and cars got broken into, but our got left alone.....

Good Luck, it might pay for you to buy the ugliest POS you can find for campus use....

IN Manhattan NYC you have to parallel park if you back in so 4 bikes fit in a spot they give you all a ticket for improper parking.

Well the grounds people didn't like this so they piled snow from the lot onto his car...........

Well I feel a little better now.

As far as a confrontation, the suspicious SUV in the spot had a bunch of Bentley Football stickers on it. Those of you who have met me probably know I'm not the kind of kid who can take on the whole football team (even at a division 2 school).

But I'm getting over it now. I went for a ride around for a bit to relax, and on my way back into campus I looked in the uppercampus parking deck, and sure enough there were 2 other bikes parked in this "no parking" zone that's blocked off by spaced out cement posts - perfect for locking my bike to! It's a hike for sure, but better than worrying about it TOO much.

When I live in the city I had a parking spot that I used summer and winter. All the neighbors knew it was mine and that I worked 2nd shift. Never had a problem till one winter when a new neighbor decided to start using my spot which I would dig out of snow (worst part was this guy had a private driveway he could use). The 1st time I spoke to the guy he basically told me to fuck off. The second night I came home and he was in my spot. I attached a tow strap to his car, put my truck in 4 wheel drive and drag that car 2 blocks into the middle of an intersection. Then went home and called the cops to tell them about some car sitting in the middle of a busy intersection abandoned. They came down towed it to impond, woke that guys sorry ass up and charged him $500 to get it back.




He never parked in my spot again!

i hate fukkers that can't park. yesterday when I came home in the heep, i parked in larua and my reserved spot with the heep and put it right against the curb (backing in the curb is on the pass side). I go inside and go back out a couple hours later and there is a grand cherokee (this years model) parked a foot and a half into my spot and they pulled in forward. I was pissed so I went out to a concert last night and the grand was still there. (this was monday night) I backed in again (as I always do) but this time I parked about 3 inches from the grand. I don't have the doors on so no worries there but thisother person could never get their door open enough to get in. Laura didn't think it was a good idea but I thought that it was funny. Today I was getting ready to go wheel and I had Dave (coffee) come over with the palm that has all the student parking vehicles listed in it to find out who's it was cause laura couldn't get the passat in the spot. Turns out it is this smokin hot field hockey player named ashley. She had to crawl in from the passenger seat I should have known it was a chick driver cause the car was pretty beat up for a new grand. rear bumper messed up, front bumper banged up and the pass door fucked. I don't think that she will park that close again.

I park my bike behind the security office here and I advise everyone on campus to not park in certain areas where people are prone to walking on the weekends when drunk. I had mine knocked over into the passat last year.... not fun.

That pisses me off. Little spoiled brats (girls,guys too), who drives new vehicles, daddy or mommy must pay somehow, they don't respect anything, think they own the whole place to themselves. They don't appreciate what they have. If I had the chance to have a car when I was younger, I would have taken good care of it to make it last for years. I know when I take my husband's Envoy, I always park a few parking spots further away from the "crowded" area, so I can avoid stupid people danting the truck with their grocery carts! It's just a few more foot steps, no big deal.

Hey! Not all of us in college are spoiled brats.
Fortunetly at UMass there arent many rich bastards that mommy and daddy buy everything for. I park my bike in a no parking section of a parking lot. Its in a corner between two spaces. I put a cover on it along with a disc lock and a 30 lb chain. Noone touches it. I started a trend in fact, last time I went out there were 3 other bikes parked near me.
