Doc, it's no secret that cops arent my favorite people. Yes, I'm well aware there are great people who are officers but that doesn't blindly make those people great officers at the end of the day.
I'm not lumping cops into one basket. I just know, based on my interactions both good and bad, they arent my favorite officials to encounter and with that, I'd rather not find out how great or how assinine they really are. Based on my exposure (good and bad) generally, I steer clear. That's all I'm saying.

Plain & simple: The vast majority (ie most, not all) of people's interactions with cops is when they or someone they know did something wrong or were in the wrong place at the wrong time and the cop was there to catch them or enforce whatever laws they may have broken.
So thus, all cops MUST suck.......... right?

Rather than discous wether or not the shot fired was warented....since none of us can change that.....why don't we all think about what we do when we get pulled over and we are on bikes. I know that if/and when i get pulled over I usually have ALL my gear (gloves, and helmet) off, jacket unzipped with my liscence and registration out, and am off the bike before they are out of the car.
But maybe cooperating when getting pulled over for something I know I have done (or can assume I have done) is just something I do....
Doc, I have had plenty of exposure to both sides of the coin, good and bad. Of my interactions, my opinion of officers is not favorable. I don't hate cops, I'd just rather not risk dealing with the swinging-dick syndrome if I don't have to.
The video in this thread is a prime example of what I am talking about. This motorcyclist did nothing to warrant getting shot.
Ok I see your point, you have only dealt with officers with a complex, or a complex you percieved. Where as I have dealt with some officers without much of a complex or I do not percieve it as such.
I don't believe this video can support your claim, just as it cannot support mine. (although I do agree that it does not appear he did anything to get shot for)

Though I disagree with stifling discussion of whether/not shot should've been fired (its a forum and and perfectly fine to debate), I thanked for what you said in bold because I think its the one of the few positive/constructive things in this thread.
I know I am very conscious about what I do when I get pulled over. I disagree w/ what you do. I personally do not do anything other than turn bike off, remove helmet and place on the tank. Then put hands down by my side so the officer has as little to worry about as possible.
And now that I've posted, the only thing I have to say about the original situation is that it sucks and was poor judgment IMO (or itchy trigger or adrenaline or whatever).
And any one of the motions of you taking off your helmet, jacket, reaching for registration or license, or getting off your bike can be misconstrued as a movement for a weapon by the officer and you will promptly be shot in the back and paralyzed for life have a nice day!
But hey somebody will argue the point it was warranted so lets discuss what you did wrong to get yourself shot in the back.
Is the defense in the case stating that the officer thought the biker was going for a weapon?

Nice thought. I really like your perspective. Me? Not that I've been pulled over in a few years, but I allways shut off my engine and keep my hands on the wheel and try not to make any sudden movements. Hell, even reaching for your registration in the glove box can spook them. If riding, I never try to reach into my pockets.
I have to disagree with what you do when pulled over LadyTata. I've been pulled over on my bike a few times and all I did was shut the bike off via key, remove key from ignition and then flipped up my visor so the officer could see my face and rested my hands on my tank/tank bag in clear view but not on top of each other. One officer asked me to remove my helmet when he got up to me so I took off my gloves and did so. Others didn't care. But I never EVER tried to get off my bike. Even when asked for my registration I plainly told the cop it was under my passanger seat and waited for them to tell me to get off the bike and retrive it. I've seen cops do some stupid shit and I'm not about to put myself in the position to be another victem of police stupidity, nor my own.
In a cage, it's always been the same routine. Pull over slowly, turn on interior lights and have the window down, engine off before the officer even gets up to the car with my hands on the steering wheel waiting for them. They seem to appreciate the gesture when you do that. I even go so far as to ask to reach for my glove box before I do it, tell them where my wallet is when I go for it, etc. Like I said, I'm not looking to get shot by some trigger happy cop.
As for this video, I think this was a case of an over zealous cop who made a very stupid move and I hope, no pray, that he pays for it dearly. No one deserves to be shot in the back like that for no reason, especially by the very people who are suppose to "protect" our community.
take note people; another danger part of riding motocycle aside from your foot being ran over by minivan.
"fuckit!"
I've been pulled over waaay too many times for unbelievably stupid reasons... And I can definitely say that I've been profiled for having a "sporty car". Thankfully I have only been found guilty of maybe 3 tickets which I deserved for speeding.. and none of the other BS reasons stuck.
I have a habit now of turning off the car immediately, flipping on the interior light and throwing the keys on the dashboard while resting my hands on the wheel.
And.. I can say that I've only met THREE nice cops out there that were polite to me and/or just wanted to "look at my car". The rest were just plain assholes on a power trip.
I've only started riding motorcycles on the street since late last season, but I keep on seeing these videos out there that scare the crap out of me that the cops are even more pissed off and reckless.. I think I'd almost want to put my hands on my helmet and kiss the dirt!![]()
1. This is the only biker shot in the back by cop video I've seen. Where are all the others?
2. People dont video cops when they're doing nice polite things, doesn't make for good video.
3.1 If you break the law and get caught by a cop that doesn't make him an asshole. It also doesn't make him an asshole if he doesn't listen to your BS and gives you your ticket.
3.2 Cops can be assholes, just not for the above reasons.

Seems like police SOP these days
(standard operating procedure)
The guy who got shot was't running at all and pulled over to the side. That is terrible trigger happiness on the cop soon to be inmate. I usually side with the police and there was not even a chase, this guy pulled over and stopped. Effing scary.
I like the flipping on the interior light thing. Nice gesture I have never thought of.
