I guess you don't get it. in NH they are going after the INSPECTION STATIONS
the Dept of Safety will sit a 1/4 mile down the road from a station, because inspections are now reported immediatly on line, the Dept of safety has reacords available immediately, it a vehicle doesn't pass, they will go after the station for putting a sticker on it.
YES they do impound vehicles for no other reason than it doesn't have a valid sticker, I've seen them do it with cages, theres no reason to beleive they won't do it with bikes.
Why do you think is was making a big deal 3 months ago when thes laws were in the legislature. and yes they are LAWS in the RSA's here in NH, not part of rulemaking (regulations)
I don't doubt that some of these laws are unconstitutional... so what, unless I have the money to appeal it don't make any difference. The MAN in effect gets away with what ever he wants.
I was just pointing out to Tiller that putting on another system for inspection purposes was, in reality *unlikely* to earn him a felony conviction for "bike exhaust swapping".
If this law is fairly new isnt there some kind of grandfather clause that would permit you to have the pipes. the shop you bought it at knows they were on there before the was put in place, right?
as for a shop not inspecting something they sold you.......there is no law against that. there are some shops out there that sell bikes but dont have an inspection license. even HD shops will sell you a 1995 softail but when it comes time to service it you find out they dont work on anything older than 1999
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...

The thing is that they are really going after the inspection stations that are inspecting bikes with aftermarket exhaust. The old law that was on the books was that you couldn't put on aftermarket exhaust, now they are enforcing it BIG TIME. My exhaust is the street version, but it is still illegal...The place I went to get my bike inspected had already lost their inspection license for 6 months because someone was caught with aftermarket exhaust, and he told the officer that it was on when the bike was inspected...Places are going to get real gun shy...I figure I'll try another place ot two with the pipes on it and see how that goes...Factory bikes are going to have to come with much better sounding exhaust if this keeps up!

well if its illegal to have an aftermarket pipe on your bike then its illegal for a shop to install it and sell it to you, thats what im saying....if a shop has an inspection station and they sell you a bike with a pipe on it then thats just not right.....they should either give you a sticker or a stock pipe.....it would be diferent if you just bought the pipe online and installed it yourself, but they sold this bike to you that way , and now there saying it cant pass inspection...id be pissed
Impounded for no a traffic offense + no inspection sticker, doubtful...
I rode my first year without a sticker, didn't know it was needed...

Where did you go to get it inspected? Don't go to a dealer, go to some small time place/mom n pop stop that deals with Harley's or something.... that's where I went and he barely checked anything...
I don't think MA is cracking down like NH & ME are, in NH it don't matter where you go, insprection stations are required now to have the computerized reporting system.Originally posted by joberly

Has he had it inspected since then tho? If he just bought it I agree they should make it pass. But if he bought it last season, before the new rules. Why should/would they fix it?
good point, but i dont think these are new "rules" I think there just cracking down on the aftermarket exhaust things now...it was never legal to adjust your carbs, fuel injection different from factory specs or change your pipes to louder than factory ones etc... could be wrong but i think thats how it isOriginally posted by cbrf41999

I spoke with my dealer today, they are getting mixed signals from Dept of Safety
mosT LEOs are going to ticket ANY exaust they THINK doesn't pass as well as aftermarket turn signals, you have the opportunity to go to court and defend yourself with a DB reading from an official inspection station
In NH the test is 106DB @ 20" from exaust tip @ 45° angle and 3000 rpm

I guess that means I should stop using my turn signals? Because they are very small, and very not DOT aprroved.Originally posted by RandyO

Thats cool now your guilty until proven innocent by you? I always thought it was the police and the court who had to prove guilt. Not the accused having to prove innocence.Originally posted by RandyO

My bike has been inspected a couple times since I bought it...They are just in the beginning to crack down on the bumb laws that are already written...I heard a Harley place in town will give a sticker as long as the exhaust has baffles...Might try there...I at least have baffles...I hope your states don't get as crazy as this!

You could also always do what my father does - register your vehicles in a different state.
A VT post office box works great, and you wouldn't even have to inspect it unless you planned on riding in VT.![]()
Got pulled over a couple years back on the wifes bike for no sticker. Lucky thing for me was the fact that it just got put on the road for the season and you have seven days for inspection. The kicker is I was taking it to get the inspection. Told the state cop that and saw that SOB waiting around the corner after I left the inspection station.![]()

I believe if you read about your aftermarket exhausts you will find that most of them have a disclaimer that says "not for street use, or for off road use only" so an inspection station can reject you just based on sight.
Don't tell the police this most of them don't know that.

Taken from Yoshimura's web site faq's
Q. Are Yoshimura exhaust systems street legal?
A. No. Our exhaust systems are intended for race use.
Q. How loud are Yoshimura exhausts?
A. Since sound files are hard to hear online, it is best to compare them to other brands. The Yoshimura RS-3 Zyclone systems are one of the quietest systems on the market today that still offer good performance gains with minimal restriction. RS-3 Zyclone systems are 90-92dB while RS-3 Race systems are 95dB. All measurements are taken at the industry standard of 20" away from the turndown tip at a 45-degree angle out from the tip. The motor is revved and held at 4,000 rpm in neutral. A reading is then taken and recorded. Round Zyclone systems are 95dB while round race systems are 101-105db depending on model.

WOW in RI in a car or on a bike if no sticker you get a ticket and as long as it gets inspected in 7 days, or at least before court it gets thrown out, the only time I've seen em tow a bike here is for no MC endorsmentand I though in NH it was l'ive free or die'
I think it's all in the wording. You said if you rode without a stickah you would 'be likely get your bike impounded.' I would like to revise that statement to say 'there is a remote possibility of getting your bike impounded.' Sure they CAN do it , but most times it's not worth the hassle. I've lived in NH for 2 years and I've been pulled over for non-inspection at least a dozen times. I usually just play dumb (I know it's a stretch, but I can pull it off.) I've gotten a few tickets, but they only cost $43.20, which is a deminimus amount compared to the cost of repairing my beaters to the point where they can actually pass a safety inspection.Originally posted by RandyO
maybe they don't in MA, but I know that I have seen a cage impounded for non inspection in NH
I've owned 3 bikes in 2 years and never even attempted to get one of them inspected. The stickah goes in such an odd location that it's not easy to pick out a bike that's uninspected. It's also a bargaining tool if you do get pulled over. I've been nabbed for exceeding the speed limit and then had the officer ticket me for non-inspection instead of speeding. After all, they just want the revenue.
And as far as NH being the Live Free or Die state... that must just be a tourism gimmick. Our country is going to hell in a handbasket and NH is right there in the bottom of the basket.![]()

I beleive the fine here in mass is $250.00 and I also beleive its considered a moving violation that gets tagged on to your insurance...use to just be 50.00 back in the day.....
You're in southern Maine? Look at a map, do the math. I'm in Center Barnstead, NH and I have the stock cans for said TL-R. Leave a deposit (just to make sure I get 'em back) and you can borrow 'em to get your bike inspected...
Toss 'em on (assuming you've just got slip-ons - most TL exhausts are), get your sticker, swap the cans back to aftermarket, get me my stockers back...
No?![]()
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
BTW-Yes, in NH you can get your vehicle impounded if you've outrun the grace periods on EITHER registrations AND/OR inspections. Usually doesn't happen, but it CAN...
