    Intent to conceal identity?

Let me start by saying, Degsy is going to LOVE this one.

So, I'm on my way home from the registry yesterday and a statie lights me up right in front of the noho barracks. I honestly have no clue why, but he's clearly PISSED. He launches into some crap about concealing my identity and my license plate is clearly not in the stock location. I know that the law does not require stock, so I ask him if it's hard to see. He screams yes and claims when I'm on the bike he can't see it. We are looking at it and it's clearly visible.

Then he launches into my flushmount blinkers and exhaust are not stock. blah, blah. Back to the plate. He believes that the hinged mount is designed to trick him. I try to explain that it is just so the plate can move as the suspension moves. He says EXACTLY, to conceal it! OK, I'm done talking. He "does me a favor" and writes me a ticket for the plate issue only and says next time he sees the bike, he will arrest me.

I was worried about passing inspection with this NYC style mod, but I never expected this. Surely he has better criminals to pursue?

    Re: Intent to conceal identity?

I got the same harassing bullshit from one of these fucktards last year, He literally yelled at me like I was stupid. Honestly he was the biggest fucking turd I had ever met. Not only did he harras me but he also kept saying shit about how he rode Harleys so he knew what motorcycle safety was... I kept thinking to myself, I bet it you and all your loser friends who ride by my house in Bolton with your mufflers blazing with the straight pipes...

Anyways... I put my bike back to stock muffler, got some of those DOT tested and approved lights and they dropped the ticket.

I have to say I was pissed at first but now that I have the stock muffler on and I can actually hear myself think and the rev of the engine and not that loud ass fart can, I like it SO much better.

about the plate though... what a dick head. thankfully you must have had your new inspection sticker or he would have wrote you up on that one too or towed the bike

    Re: Intent to conceal identity?

Pm me if you would like advice on fighting this. Perhaps discuss it on the way to NH later today to surf?

Unfortunately, I hear many stories of mass state troupers pulling drill instructor BS on traffic stops on 91, perhaps to see if they can get the stoppee in more trouble. Shockingly, they refuse to carry video cameras in their cars to record all this, and you may be charged with a crime for recording them without their knowledge.

I'm also shocked he didn't claim you were speeding, too loud, or making a improper lane change. What's the fine for the license plate deal?

Probably what set him off was the inability of his auto-plate-reader to run your RMV and criminal record without any effort on his part, as he blows by you doing 90 (which is entirely safe for HIM, because he took a couple days special driver training)

    Re: Intent to conceal identity?

I did manage to get an inspection sticker, though I had my doubts. The previous owner put a lot of time and money into this setup. It's nice and easy to convert to track mode, so I was hoping to keep it.

    Re: Intent to conceal identity?

bummer. had the same experience with the Buell and SXV.

i never changed the Buell location but they eventually broke me on the SXV. when suspension would squat, the plate became difficult to see. when they were driving the opposite direction, they thought it was a dirt bike without a plate at all. instant lights.

Yeah, considering I live 2.5 miles from the barracks, I'm going to move it.

I had that happen to me once. I took pictures to prove it was clearly visible, went to court, they agreed it was legal, and then the trooper claimed I moved it after the ticket.

I gotta say, while he may have been a dick, there are a lot of sport bikes in Boston with the plates bent up, and it pisses off the cops no end.

    Daniel Robello saw to that.....

Holy shit, it's like you were standing there for my interaction. I went though all that AND he threatened to, "call you in as a runner."

I said go for it buddy, make sure you tell 'em the black bike parked on the side of the hwy is running away from you.

fyi - everything stock, going 45 in stop and go morning commute traffic on 90. Wrote up 85+, weaving lanes and abuse of a motorcycle lane. haha - 85+ and he kept up in his Explorer, please - explain it again to the judge for me.

So what was the outcome? Did the court believe the trooper's claim? Also, did the trooper snap a picture himself when he issued the ticket to back up his claim?

The trooper did snap a photo in my stop. I *almost pulled out my phone to snap my own pic from the front bumper of his cruiser, but I thought I might get cuffed.

    Re: Intent to conceal identity?

Paul, you're a complete disgrace to the motorcycling community. I'll see you this weekend so you can turn custody of your bike over to me.

Srsly though... if you choose to fight it, do what I did last time I had to fight a ticket. I brought a printout of my TTD instructor bio page, copies of emails involving Eugene Carabine and an effort a while back to reduce the number of sportbiker deaths in MA and copies of emails between myself and Joe Proia proving I was an MSF RiderCoach candidate.

Ticket was for 85+ in a 65.... I walked. "NR". Booya.

FWIW I hear there is a new crop of recently-graduated MSP out of Academy running around looking for trouble.

What saddens me most since iv been in similar and worse situations is that's where big chuck of my/our tax money goes.
Luckily Worcester PD would never be like that since they have real shit to deal with. Unfortunately around Worcester there is shrewsbury, holder, Leicester and auburn and that's not the case there at all.
I could be the biggest criminal there for doing 5 over the speed limit.

I think you should fight it and bring Pete as your lawyer. Oh, and don't forget to mention you're a champion road racer. That will show them you can handle speed responsibly.

    Re: Intent to conceal identity?

I've started running my JVC Actioncam at all times when riding. It only adds another 5-10 seconds to my start and stop procedure. May of helped in this situation. Camera is in plain view, they can't get you for recording the actions of a police officer if you are not hiding the fact that the camera is there. Towards the end of the stop, pull camera off while still recording, show ticket, show view from rear of bike. Seems like a pretty easy win. If they try to get you for illegally recording a law enforcement officer, doubt it would stand up in court.

    Re: Intent to conceal identity?

Pete. that is illegal. You can't say you are an MSF instructor in an unrelated traffic stop. I could use the Tony's page. The problem is I have illegal blinkers and pipe as well, so all my photographic evidence could backfire. I'm going to contest it and bring pictures of my relocated plate/blinkers.

After the Glik case, MA police officers are well aware that they can be legally recorded - video and sound: "this First Amendment right publicly to record the activities of police officers on public business is established."

Gilk was also recently upheld in federal court in a NH case.

    Record away at the officer.
