Just picked up a 2007 SMR 510 last weekend. Was a good deal I couldn't pass up on...Been riding to work, hitting a few trails, and really digging the new ride. (It scares me sometimes)
This is my first motard, and I have limited dirty ride experience so this bike is a handful compared to what I usually ride.(600's) It's a Wheelie machine....It's different.... and a freakin' BLAST TO RIDE!!!
So what is the first mods that "SHOULD" be done? Skid plate and sliders I assume? Anything I should know out of the gate on these toys?
I see this bike getting me in trouble if not careful. =0)

I would say one of the only things left for you to do is bark busters. I am a fan of acerbis.

Nice
Get some busters for it ( Cycra probends with the low-pro plastic shields, and replaceable sliders), keep it quiet, and come riding. Once things dry up a bit more, I'm going to try most of the pachaug loop on the SM![]()
Yamaha
I'll ride the elephant down to pachaug for that!
They don't hold much oil in the motor, so frequent changes are a must. Check adv, and tt to see if cats are plumbing in oil coolers to make that pricey syn last a bit longer. I'm assuming it has a fan on the radiator since it's a streetbike, if not, that'd be something to consider. And bark buster are an absolute necessity. Any kind with aluminum bars are what you want. Check out highway dirtbikes version, for fold in mirrors, and high coolness factor.
So now the only thing left is to sell the cbr and buy another for the track.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
skid plate, bar guards, desmog that thing, do the baffle mod, sliders, hand gaurds.
Did you de suicide the kickstand?
Theres a few mods you can read about - especially on supermotojunkie...with regards to the throttle stop on the carb, and rejetting it.
Agree on the oil changes and also the valve checks are semi easy - just be careful not to drop the shims into the block.
Mine blew 2nd gear FWIW = complete engine rebuild.

sick ride, congrats! that thing already has a nice list of goodies so... Cycra Pro Bends w/low profile shields, SME axle sliders and if you're gonna trail it a skid plate would be good. doesn't have to be a crazy big/heavy enduro style either. for tires, my neighbor liked the Distanzias quite a bit, i prefer the Scorpion Sync. if you're going to track it, these choices would change of course.
add gas and ride! there are shitloads of great sumo roads in the Uxbridge/Quabbin/Leomister triangle for local stuff.
for maintenance reading/questions: Cafe Husky, SMJ + TT for parts and products: Hall's Cycles, Motosportz, Zip Ty Racing
here's a good valve adj vid below to keep bookmarked, changing the oil frequently is a must and keep the air filter clean. i like the No Toil system.
snowborder makes a good point, do you know if the bike was opened up and jetted properly? the JD kits are great, has everything you need. (if it's the same as my TC250 which i'm pretty sure it is)

Another vote for the Distanzia tires. I had them on my DR650 motard and liked them very much.
Thanks for all the great info guys. This bike is just stupid fun so far. It actually scares the shot out of me sometimes.
Im gonna order some slidders, a skid plate, and some hand guards this week. I guess I need to dasmog this hitch, do the silenced mod, filter, and get the jet kit. How hard is it to tune these in once everything is done? I'd probubly do it all at once so I feel a big difference.
If there are any riders around my area that wants to show the new Moto rider the ropes and a few trails id be mighty thankful.
Have I mentioned how stupid fun this machine is!!!!!!!!
