I see the point youre trying to make Pete, and I still humbly disagree with you.
I find a HUGE difference between someone who gets in over his head and crashes and dies, and someone who is running from the police, whether a split second decision or not, and crashes and dies. I still wont say he DESERVED death, but I feel less bad for someone in that case. Hes 22 years old, hes on a permit, hes doing wheelies, he made choices LONG before running. Would all the MSFs and track days on earth have changed his decision? Maybe, but I would think not, the only thing it would change in this case is he wouldve had a better chance to get away, it doesnt make it right. We can what if all day long, fact of the matter remains, the kid ran from the police instead of owning up to his mistakes, and died. I cant feel much sympathy for him, call me an asshole, call me whatever you want, its how I feel.
And yes I dont know this kid, and no one I know has been killed on a bike (HUGE KNOCK ON WOOD) so maybe my opinion would change, but Im sorry, I just dont have sympathy flying out of me for this kid.

from scale of 1 to 10, im on 5. thte man is just as responsible from the initial stop. kid was scare, adrenalin went up and ride over his head.

i should add that if it was the other way around, say the man crash and die, then the kid would have been held responsible as in the case in FL and another somewhere after that. in the end the guy running is the bad guy.

I think people skip over personal responsibility way too much...a certain bike is NOT gonna save you, gear is NOT gonna always save you, even an MSF course is NOT gonna save you...you need to save yourself.
I haven't taken any type of riding course, have crashed 0 times, dropped a bike 0 times and closest calls have been people taking left turns in front of me almost taking me out (actually one dude hit me doing that but I didnt fall luckily). Everyone needs to use their OWN brain and ride to their ability blablablaaaa....you get it. Anyhow, I fall into the "I feel bad for his family and friends" boat and do not wish death on anyone. Early on in the thread I said something short like "turn your brains on" that was not a comment meaning he got what he deserved, it was an honest statement to not lose your rational...even when you're essentially on a race bike on public roads. A lot of us struggle with riding "safe" at all times, that is what sucks about the roads (that and traffic and speed limits and hot chicks to look at).

Wouldnt it seem to be a better buisness decision to start someone with a smaller bike, KNOWING they will upgrade eventually.

I have seen plenty of people buy a 250 or something small from a dealer and the dealer take it back when they are ready for a high % of the origional price in trade for a new bike.

Yes it would. But, if they choose to go against my recommendation and buy whatever they want, that is their choice. That is the point that I am trying to make.

We sell a crap load of Buell Blasts, and then we get them back in trade and sell them again. I am an advocate for rider safety and training, and I will make my recommendations whenever appropreate.

Its all about respecting the machine.. with that said noone deserves to die from making one wrong decision, its not like he planned someones murder and then was running away from having killed someone. Yea, it was his choice, yea he was riding over his head.. he shouldnt have done it, but death shouldnt be the penalty. Hes got friends, family, and loved ones. Good luck to everyone surviving him.

man. Thats just a shame. I have to say, it might be an unpopular opinion, but I think the US needs to adopt the Euro method of licensing where when you are young or it is your first bike, it is like a 125, and you step your way up to buying a 1K. These kids cannot handle that sort of power. too much temptation, no time to learn the important lessons.

They also have same rules in Singapore. Although the logic behind it is great, there are a few problems implementing it in US. US sees a lot of new immigrants and foreign students. I am one. I used to ride a 180 CC bike in India and I had grown out of it. If I had to go back to 125 cc bike, we'll it would not be right (for me i.e.). Maybe if there was a system where riding records from one country can be honored in another, it would be great ( I had a clean riding record in India).

+1 to the fact that going direct to a 1000 Cc or even a 600 CC is a lot.

what do we know about all this? the guy is young and inexperience. him and his budy were squiding around. lets say the shift has ended and changing shift. they squid around some more without any interuption. what do you think is most likely to happen? i'd say the kid would live another day. now you could say that that kind of behavior may sooner or later hurt himself and/or others but that's different story.
