Yeah, that's why I don't refer to "doing 100mph and weaving through traffic" as lane splitting/sharing. That's just being a douchebag.
But you're right. Most motorists can't tell the difference between the idiot risking everyone's lives and the guy doing 5-20mph between vehicles.

The same people complaining about bike splitting lanes and would cut you off and/or open the door on you doesn't understand that there would be less traffic if riders were able to split lanes. Cutting other cars off in a car causes more traffic than a bike splitting lanes.

I've mostly been one to follow most of the rules of the road. I think today changed my thoughts on that. At least for 2 wheels.
Rt 11 S was backed up at least 40 minutes due to the 95 closure.
It was hot, no shade, hardly any breeze. Also got passed by some Harley riders filtering on the shoulder.
Should I have just hopped on the shoulder and followed or stuck with traffic like I did?
Now I really know why people in CA like it.
Yeah, there's no way I'd sit there and overheat. Sorry, even a mesh jacket is an oven if you're not moving.
The bigger the town/city you're in the more excepted it seems to be. If a cop saw me lanesplitting in the Burbs I'm sure I would get pulled over. I go through Lowell a lot and have even filtered to the front of a red light not noticing a cruiser in the adjacent lane and he just gave me a nod. Guess it really depends where you are. Hey, the more riders lanesplitting the better IMO. Legality aside, it will never become an accepted riding practice if nobody ever does it.

Any experience with it in CT? Right now I'm only thinking about it for highways.

Not trying to inflame anyone by saying this, but: good luck to those of you who want lanesplitting. I don't have a problem with it. I have no personal iron in the fire, though, because I have no desire to ride my motorcycle anywhere where lane splitting would be a benefit, and I actively avoid such situations. Too damn dangerous and not enough fun to justify that kind of riding for me...not the lane splitting, but the overall trusting of my life to thousands of potentially road raged, over worked and exhausted, low blood sugar, marching ants with texting and Facebook who couldn't drive well even if they were trying to do so.
I'd rather roadrace in gym shorts than commute in and out of New York City or Boston on a motorcycle for a season. Country roads, take me home, to the place, where I belong.
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...

x2. Be careful. I've done it and haven't had any issues but most drivers have the attitude that you're doing something totally insane and criminal. I only do it on highways or overly long stop lights where I would need to wait 2-3 cycles just to get to the light.
Just saw this vide. Ouchie..
“It's 2 minutes for any capable adult.”
Yeah, I've seen that one before.
I especially love the car stopped across a double yellow.
why does a bike have any more right to cross double yellow or land split than a car?

in CA you can't cross the double yellow bike or car...bikes do it anyways and it's a more common occurence among motorists to see a bike do it. Cars aren't supposed to cut into the carpool lane like that, and it's less frequent, but it happens...bike guys just get more mad when cars do it
saw that video...they were def. moving too...I split/share everyday (live in cali)...you gotta watch your speed enough that anyone merging into your lane you can stop or weave around
one argument is that it's safer in traffic vs. getting rear ended...IIRC the statistics say you're more likely to get rear ended than side swiped like that

I've been lanesplitting for a few months now (moved to CA). I'm ATGATT and believe my years of experience (both on the street and on the track) keep me out of trouble. It seems the only people who catch up to me while lanesplitting are the ones that only wear a helmet or minimal gear. Surprisingly, I haven't witnessed anything like the video posted above yet (and hope I never do). I do see about 4 to 6 rear-end accidents on my daily commute so I do believe there is validity to the safety aspect of splitting.

I'll blame the motorcyclist for that one. If he was splitting the stopped traffic, he was going way too fast. He had no business trying to split the Prius since it was moving right up until it cut over into normal traffic. They also had their directional on before changing lanes. Had he been paying attention and riding properly, it would have never happened.
