That is what i was thinking at first, being that it would be such an odd time to be called by the local pd. I know you said the gentleman called you back today but have you confirmed that either his number or the other one which you had called in "urgency" were actual numbers of the depts?
That would have been the second thing i would have done after checking my bike was still in the garage. Phishing scams are everywhere and people are becoming desperately more clever. If you've given any personally identifiable information without confirming that they are who they say they were I'd be a little worried. Being that he actually called you back I'd assume your were talking to the actual authorities though. I would just give the dept a call from their listed number and ask for the officer dealing with this case and if you get the same voice your in the clear. If they have have no officer by that name or any recollection of this incident I would maybe start parking my bike at a friends house for a while...
Lmao @ the conspiracy theories
I confirmed it was the PD. Nobody would put that much effort into stealing a 13 year-old beat up 9R with 107,000 miles on the clock though.
Last week at work we had a guy get the "your family was in a car accident and we need you to wire money call" Guy kept the caller on the line, police arrived but obviously weren't able to do much. Point is that A) It happens and B) They are putting the effort into detailed drawn out scams like this.
Traffic safety is not the goal but the excuse.
The cop from the nearby town called me back last night. He apologized for the disturbance. He blamed my local police for the disturbance saying that he specifically did not want them to disturb me at 0130 at all. He claimed that he had to talk them out of coming to my house and knocking on my door and that the call was a compromise. He would not tell me what they were investigating, saying that the investigation is still ongoing and that he cannot divulge details, but did confirm that they used the description of my bike in their database to find me. I bet my curiosity just moved me up the list of suspects, oh well...
Yeah, your curiosity and your upcoming trip out of the country won't help either. C'mon fess up, what'd you do??

I can resist everything but Pete's mom.
In college, had a campus cop come and knock on my back door of my apartment at 3:30am, on campus, during finals week. He knocked for about 10 seconds. I got up, went to the back door. Nobody there.
Half an hour later, more knocking, this time from the front door. Got up, went to door, nobody there.
Next day, get a call. "Yeah, your truck got backed into in a (completely empty other than my truck) parking lot. Very minor scratch. We couldn't get in touch with you. You should really answer the door, it was important."
"You guys didn't wait at the door more than 15 seconds. I was in bed. Why didn't you call me on the phone or at least leave a note on the door?"
"Um......-------(associates degree from community college writing checks the brain can't cash)... sorry about that, but we really needed to get in touch with you."
Y U NO REALIZE PEOPLE DON'T STAND AT THE DOOR AT 3:30AM WAITING TO ANSWER IT. GIVE ME 20 SECONDS TO GET OUT OF BED IF IT'S THAT IMPORTANT, TEH FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU
