I doubt you would tell him "the same thing" because with this kind of attitude you'd be just another one of the many shops that had closed their doors. Your tire machine would've been sold in a bankruptcy auction years ago.

Testy reply. So you don't shop on line??
I think the fact that they lied is enough to put most folks off going back, A simple, "we can't make enough money just fitting tires would be enough. If I were in that position, I would have been more than happy to toss a bit extra their way to make it worthwhile but an outright lie is bad business, plain and simple.

    Insurance regulations?

I have a shop that swaps my race tires for $15/ ea....tires I certainly am not buying from them. Never been an issue.

    Two suggestions:

Support your fellow members on NESR

    OR

Make some more phone calls to other motorcycle shops in your area

Spoken like so many of the shops that get bashed by the Forums for poor customer services, and suffer the consequences. Believe it or not this online networking IS important to bike businesses being profitable.

I'd love to know actual dealer cost on a set of BT-003's, if anyone wants to share info. 120/70 190/55. I'm baffled as to why so many places haven't figured out that if you mark them up a little, you're gonna sell a whole lot more than what you'd sell at or near MSRP.
If you've been to Roadside you know who runs the parts dept. They buy tires in very small volume. I can get tires online for less then Roadside buys them for. I know this for a fact. Blaming it on the ins. co is complete bullshit also. Dan, the guy that runs the service side of the business could give two steaming country dumps where the tires come from. He charges the same to mount them since it's money Roadside would NOT make if he was a tool. He gets it....... Just like a business should be run.

I work at a shop and I can tell you that we have a much different policy. We will mount your tires for the same price no matter where you bought them and will get you in just as quickly no matter where you purchased. I guess our philosophy is to do what it takes to get the customer in the door. If your waiting around half an hour to an hour while your tires are being swapped, chances are you might end up buying something else in the shop.

I've heard of a few shops turning online buyers away.... I understand the frustration, but it seems like the wrong solution.

I'd recommend giving your local shops a shot with tires though...we usually match prices or at least come damn close...and sometimes online you are buying seconds or older tires.

Maybe "seconds" is the wrong terminology, but there are cosmetic blemished tires available.

That I can buy. I cant say I have ever seen that or heard of it before. I know that most online shops move so much stock that the chances of getting an old tire are pretty slim to none.
Plain truth is the online stores will buy them at huge bulk discounts and sell them at volume for $5 a tire profit if they need to. They make on the shipping also.

We mount and balance on customers tires with a smile:-)

Yeah after doing some research, i'm having trouble finding anyone offering "blems". I only said so because they were actually offered to me a couple years ago... but maybe they are now prohibited? Not really sure, managed to find auto/atv blems online and thats about it.

Either way, yes online tire companies get massive volume discounts and sell at tiny profits....but a good dealer should be willing to mount them regardless.

You most likely were not being offered blems, but being offered a price lower than allowed by the manufacturer.
By calling them blems they get around that issue. Lots of places do it.

I get a good deal at my local dealer, front tire on my V-strom just under $200, the only work I did was ride my bike, tire alone online is $130+shipping, I didn't have to lift the front of my bike, bend over break my back, bust my knuckles, than drive the wheel to the shop, then drive it back and bust my knuckles again putting it back on the bike, No dealing with dangling calipers, I think I got as fair deal, a local mechanic got to keep his job for another hour, been a rough season, not much sled & snow equipment needin fixin, but a break a couple weeks ago with 80° weather in March

Re: Local shop refusing to mount tires,,,,

If I owned a shop, I'd be happy to have customers come in to have their tires mounted. Great chance to meet new customer, look over a bike if it comes in, show 'em around, and demonstrate my great service. I'd charge enough to make a couple bucks and also let him know what I'd have sold the tires for had he bought 'em from me. A lot of the time the difference isn't that great.

On the other hand, if this is a guy shopping for blems (haven't heard that term since I worked at Goodyear 40 years ago!), looking to save 1.50 here and 3.00 there I'd probably just as soon not have him as a customer....

I agree Dave, looks like these shops have forgotten why they are going out of business.

it's called Customer Service. My experience has been, if you're not buying a bike they don't even want to talk to you.

In reality, a dealer charging $20 a walk in wheel tire change is going to make as much money as a tire sale, given very few tires are sold at MSRP. If they won't mount walk in tires then they are probably gouging on tire sales as well.....stay away.

The best deals i have seen - riders smart enought to buy through race track tire guys (good tire price), come to the race track with their rims and have mounted for $0, and watch a few races in the deal :-)

On the other hand, if the guy is actually busy (shocking thought I know) it makes perfect sense to turn away a random tire change from someone that didnt buy the tires. If his time is occupied by people that buy tires from him, and other work, whats the sense in making 5 bucks and delaying all his other work.

It's one thing to be honest and turn away a customer, its another thing to treat a customer like an idiot and turn them away at the same time.

And probably 98% of the people will buy the insurance BS and buy tires from him next time, thus his business goes up. However, more people would be offended by the sorry, too busy for you. Oh well. Lose 1 customer, gain a bunch of tire sales. Evens out I bet.
