That's rite i'll be making the trip this afternoon to register my newly acquired Aprilia. Quick question i was hoping someone could answer: What book value will they use to calculate my sales tax since there is no NADA value for my make and model bike.
I bought my first bike below book value and when i get there they said we take whichever value is higher, the NADA book value or your purchase price.
I'd be amazed if they actually based the sales tax on how much I paid for the bike.
They take your word for it on bikes. Get a Low bill of sale.

This is sort of related........
I just moved in to MA and recently bought/registered my new car in NH (October). The vehicle was purchased from MA dealer....will I have to pay sales tax when I register? I can't find the answer on their stupid site.
thanks
NH does have an insanely high registration charge though - you might get a break on the remaining amount you paid...

For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction - and sometimes a scar...
That's the thing - my reg cost was about $500....I think i'll just wait till
it runs out and register it in MA. The bike is another matter. That comes up in June.
What's the avg bike reg cost in MA?
Yeah I picked up a Tuono last fall & they went by the actual sale price on the Bill of Sale & Title.
I shoulda put a lower figure on there but it wouldn't have made much difference.

My insurance company knows how much I paid for it & asked me what I valued it at... I said 6g's... I think I'm gonna give them a call & ask them how much it would adjust my premium if I brought that up to 7 or 8g's as you can't really find a replacment for that cheap.... I definitely got a good deal.

When I registered my Buell M2, they totally disreguarded my bill of sale which was for $3250, and went with the book value which was around $5000. This didn't take into account that the bike was quite roached out. The RMV guy seemed to have a problem with me for some reason and his attitude showed.
Ok, so even if the bike was purchased
in NH over two years ago I'll get charged
sales tax by MA???
not if you already own it, no. This applies to title transfers, not registrations

I did this a couple months ago for a 2002 dakota I bought. The bill of sale only said $1800 dollars and thats what i paid the tax on. The book value was something like $9,800. I think if you get it from a "dealer" then they have to go with the price you pay as long as you provide the dealer ID number. I'm sure with private sales they take the larger value.
Just got back a little while ago and took the bike for a quick rip around the block.
I was suprised it wasnt as cold as i thought it would be. Maybe i was too wound up to notice.
RMV lady goes and I quote "what is it, aprilia, that's not on here. Is there anything else you would call it like racer or something."
Ended up using the price I paid since they had no idea what an "april" was.
Atleast it was a little funny, usually I leave there all pissed off. They were actually a little courteous with me this time.
Werd...
So what kind did ya end up gettin? Make with the pictures
EDIT: Nevermind, found it

The magic number is 6, as in 6-months. It's the same in Florida. They told me I had to pay sales tax on my BMW because it was registered in NH for less than 6 months. I told them, "GFY, I'll be back in 5 months when my NH tag expires."
By the way, I hate myself for having to look that up. It just irks me to see people tossing around misinformation like it's fact. I just don't see the point.

I bought my bike in mass and registered it in RI. Over a year later a year and 2 months to be exact, when I transfered to mass (having payed RI sales tax) mass charged me sales tax on 10k plus penalties. IF you bought it in mass and didnt pay mass sales tax they will ask for your money, or they wont register it.
I bought my Mustang in MA in 03 when I lived in RI. I later moved to MA in 05 and regestered it with no problems. Show your original registration that showes that you paid sales tax to somewhere, and no one can give you any trouble.IF you bought it in mass and didnt pay mass sales tax they will ask for your money, or they wont register it.
Likewise, I bought a trailer in RI and paid sales tax at point of sale. I regestered it without any additional tax in MA.
