I finally got rid of the Monster yesterday...

    and I picked up a 2009 BMW F800GS!

I've been contemplating giving up riding for about a year because I no longer enjoyed it. I could get about 30 miles into a ride before my wrists and lower back were in pain and I just wanted to turn back. Then, last week I took a demo F800GS out and quickly realized that the problem was the shitty ergos on my Monster.

It's great having a fuel gauge now and I can't wait to use the heated grips on colder days. I can also ride much further on a single tank with the F800, as it looks like I will average a bit over 200 miles on one tank, whereas my Monster needed to be refueled every 95 miles.

I can't wait for a day off work so I can rack up some miles.

Nice bike. I've also gone to upright seating for the street. I'll never own a sportbike for the street again. I thought my monster was comfy, but that 800 looks REALLY comfy.

That bike tempted me very much. I hope I don't ride one because I think I may buy one.

Comfort-wise, going from the Monster to the F800 was a greater step than going from my 996S to the Monster. It really is VERY comfy

Nice machine! Even pondered switching to the F800 from the R1200.

Re: I finally got rid of the Monster yesterday...

I love mine. I love the seating position and I thought I would strictly use it on class 6 roads, but I was surprised how much I liked riding it on the street. Great ability to see over traffic and excellent low speed handling make it a great everyday bike.

And in the right hands, its capable of some off road duty as well. I'm just don't have that skillset (yet). Here I am ordering a new LH mirror.

I will start by saying that the 1200GS is far out of my price range, but I did test ride both bikes before buying the 800. I found the 800 to be a bit more nimble, much lighter feeling and very flickable. The 1200 is obviously more powerful, but the 800 is no slouch either, and I feel that the 800 is a much more controllable bike.

Really? I've ridden both as well and had the opposite experience. The 800 felt really slow-handling for a bike its size (probably because of the 21" front wheel), whereas I was surprised by how agile the 1200 was -- it looks like it should be a pig, but it's amazingly nimble.

I also found the 1200 seat FAR more comfortable and didn't like the way the 800's engine heat is vented right onto the rider's legs.

Of course, they're both great bikes regardless. Congrats on the purchase!

I haven't posted in a while because I haven't really been into riding much lately until this purchase. I will probably post more now though.

You are right. its about a $4,000 difference, but thats $4,000 I didn't have to spend on a bike. Also, I felt that the step up from the 800gs to the 1200gs didn't warrant the step up in price.

Re: I finally got rid of the Monster yesterday...

    O.

Well, I TOLD you I was tuned OUT. Ducati, eh? This poser bastard at school today, he shows up for school with $400.00 worth of Ducati boots, and (he said) a thousand dollars worth of leather jacket, pants and gloves, all branded Ducati, but he's ridden dirt bikes and "intends" to buy a 996, or 998, or some shit like that. Meanwhile, he actually dropped his cb250 Nighthawk in what they call a "perimeter turn" cone arrangement. They dis-invited him for the final exam and final days' festivities for tomorrow. Oh. They also dismissed all three wimminfolk, too. They simply would not accelerate the bikes to the point where they could do a countersteer, a 20MPH "emergency" stop, or lean the bike over enough to clear the outside cones in the 135-degree third gear turn. The guy told us afterward if you can't do it here, you sure as Hell can't do it on the street, and "we ain't here to hand out a license to those who can't even do it here". Case closed. These MSF instructors do NOT fugg around. They don't put the stink of shame on it, they said this motorcycling thang simply isn't for everyone, period. They usually lose 5 outta 30. They lose the graduate that is, but they keep the $349.00.

These BRC guys have to eat too, I guess..

Pretty much par for the course up there, too?

I've been in the same boat as you for about 3 months now! My GS500 was the same way... too small for a guy 6' tall and 220lbs. Wrists, back, and ass were sore by 45 miles.

Hence why I just picked up an 01' Triumph Tiger 955i... holy hell is this bike comfy!

My dad's actually looking at the F800GS for his next bike, we'll see though... aren't they amazing?!

I was actually looking at the Tiger 1050, but the dealer wouldn't budge on their setup and destination charges and insurance would have been over twice as much as I'm paying for the 800GS.
