yesterday after riding across the kanc west to east, as I approach the stoplight on rt 16, the light is red, there is a car waiting in the left turn lane
but, the fucking idiot pulled way past the stop line and was not parked over the sensor that triggers the light, I pull up behind him but my bike wasn't enuf to trigger the light
what to do? normally I run the light at the first clear opportunity, but this time I have a SUV in front of me
I ended up going around him and leaving him at the light that wasn't going to trigger unless he backed up or another car pulled up behind him

That is bizarre.
I knew it was going to be something really odd when RandyO hasn't encountered it.
Down in Va., they're bagging the pavement sensors and putting up little sonar peepers on top of the signal lights to detect waiting traffic. Saw a couple in North Reading passing through the other day, the idea must be catching on..

nothing to do with motorcycling but I hate when people stop past the stop line. It sucks when they do it because have I stop in the middle of the intersection and have to creep towards them till they finally realize they are fucking idiots and my truck can't make the turn because they are stupid as shit.
I've stopped at a light before (that I couldn't trigger with the bike) and the people that stopped behind me gave me about a 50 foot buffer zone, which meant that they weren't gonna trigger the light either. I motioned for them to move forward, and they just waved at me *face palm*

I always like to see a car give me a little bufferzone. I appreciate the "I don't want to rearend a motorcycle" thoughtprocess that many people don't seem to have.Originally Posted by SV650N

I had my own new experience at a light this morning. I washeaded north sitting in the left lane at a red light waiting to turn left. Jackass from west bound traffic makes a left turn and dosen't see me until I hit the horn. Then he swerves hard left to go on the inside of me. If I didn't hit the horn I might have been able to get out of the way but if not he would of ran right over me. Becarefull out there I never even thought of that one.
If that was Gorham center... I avoid that intersection like the plague.
I have most of my common routes specifically set-up to avoid heavy intersections, where people seem more focused on things... other than driving. Unfortunately, can't avoid them all.
If you ever see a geek with a bright yellow full-face helmet.... that's me.
I try to give those idiots every chance to see me.
In dry air at 68 °F, the speed of sound is 1,125 feet per second.
This equates to 768 miles per hour, or about one mile in five seconds.

Nice job on noticing the guy coming towards, and beeping your horn.
I'd like to have a paintball gun handy to spell 'idiot-in-cage' on their cars.

this happens to me alot on my supermoto, I always wanted to get one of them high strength magnets to put on the bottom of my bike, they supposably trigger the light, anyone every tried them, I almost bought one up at weirs during bike week but I didn't
The first traffic light on Mall rd. that tuns into the Burlington Mall coming from 95, is just like that. I use to wait 2 light cycles before I would turn on red on it, but I have finally found the sweet spot! I also use to get mad at the cars that DON'T stop at the white line like your supposed to. But now I like to just go around them and leave them sitting forever!
On average 3 of the 5 days a week I work there is a car pulled to far forward on that light!

Vawn which light are you talking about? I can't seem to picture it.
Ahhhm, no (don't think so at least). There's an infrared component to the strobe that triggers the system. Also, most of the newer ones are encoded to prevent DirtyMIRTs from being created.
Here's information on building your own MIRT, but beware it's now a Federal Offense to sell or use a MIRT unless your an authorized user. State laws may cover possession of a MIRT, but I never did the research on it.

I shut the street light out once by pointing a 1,ooo,ooo candlepower flashlight at it. Fooled the sensor into thinking it was daylight.
FYI the starter trick does not always work. There are at least 3 lights around my area that I can't trigger. I've tried the starter trick, I've tried putting the kickstand down on the corner of the loop, I'm not really sure what else to try. I eventually run them, but since the lights around here don't cycle unless they sense a car, I think I technically have to wait like 5 minutes or something ridiculous until it's legal to proceed.
If the Govmnt gave a shit it would be easy to put up
Cameras and have a computer look at street markings to find cars or bikes.
Even possible on lonelier intersections or later at night to see an approching vehicle and decide to turn the light in their favor so you never have to actually stop. In cities even put a request through to the next light.
