    Inspection Sticker rant...

Well, I tried to get an inspection sticker today on my TL1000R at the dealer I get my bike serviced at and I could not get a sticker...The owner of the shop is awesome, and I don't blame him, I blame this crap state...My bike has aftermarket exhaust, and Maine is cracking down on loud bikes thanks the the Hardley Davidson guys running straight pipes...So, I guess from now on I'll run without an inspection sticker, and take the $130 fine, or I can run with stock exhaust, if I can buy some from E-bay (My bike came from the dealership new with these pipes) ...I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet? I think I'm going to see what new laws come out in the fall (since they are coming out with even strickter laws from what I hear)...Just needed to rant a little...Thanks in advance!

Nope, my buddy just sold his softail deuce and is buying a new Harley, and the dealer told him it's a good thing that he doesn't have his deuce anymore, because he wouldn't be able to give him a sticker due to the same issue. His bike was WICKED loud...I couldn't even hear mine over his...And his wasn't a straight pipe...

Sounds like you need a set of EBAY stockers just for inspection then..... Kept the stocker for the FZR just incase I ever needed to do the same but you don't have the same situation buying it that way....

how can they just not inspect it? They should have to test it to see if it exceeds the noise limit. you can't just go by ear. What is the loudest decible level allowed?

Looks like it may be time to break out the wrenches and the stock parts to get the inspection sticker (BS law). When you get home, change it back. PITA yes, but a lot less then $130 each time they catch you...

Problem is you will stick out like a ore thumb with the pipes on afterwards again. You will most likely get a ticket. They would know it is not stock if they can here it from a half mile away. NH is cracking down as well on pipes this year I guess. Exhaust systems maybe a thing of the past. Boy it will make events like Laconia Bike week a little strange...

Well, I thought about getting stockers just to get an inspection sticker (thanks for the offers on letting me borrow 'em), but it is a felony if you modify equipment after you get a sticker. So, if I did put stockers on to get a sticker, put on my slip on's afterwards, and I got pulled over, I could be charged with a felony offense!! Is this rediculous or what! I guess I'm going to just take the $130 ticket for no inspection sticker...Might see about buying a set of stock cans and having internals of my pipes put inside and re-welded up or something like that...

I think i would have argued with them a little (actually a lot) since they sold you the bike with those pipes on it..i mean that sucks, they sell you a bike with aftermarket pipes on it and then say you cant pass inspection...I think theres a law against that and id make them give you either a sticker or a stock pipe (and you keep the aftermarket one) thats BS if you ask me......

Is the exhaust a street or race version?

If it is the street they are suppose to fall withing legal noise limits. Might be a point worth questioning.....

I'm not sure who told you that, but it reeks of BS. State inspections are a function of a state agency, and thus all of the laws governing it are actually regulations. Breaking a regulation is not a felony.

And even if it were, I really think the local DA has better things to do than prosecute a felony offense for motorcycle exhaust tampering.

I dont think a street exhaust is DOT certified, and really thats what this is all about in the end usually.

Highghsider should stick to Vermont law, I now that in NH at least, some of the inspestion requirenments are in the RSAs and not in rule making, and when the legislature passes a RSA, they can make non compliance a civil violation, misdemeanor, felony or anything they like

anyway, In NH, I don't think it's a felony to run an aftermanrket exaust, BUT I think it might be a felony (misdemeanor at minimum) for an insection station to put a sticker on a bike that does not meet minimum requirements

like I posed previously, I don't beleive they are going after individuals rather the inspection stations.

if you ride without a sticker, and get stopped for ANYTHING you are likely to end up with your bike impounded, so you end up with a $130 fine AND a long walk home

I dont envision them imponding the bike. UNless it is a flagrantly unsafe violation. No brakes, no brake lights etc... I doubt loud exhaust would come into play for the impound.
Hopefully NH keeps there heads in check with all of this sound requirement legislation they have been workingon this year.

Ever heard of a federal DMV? Me either. Departments of Motor Vehicles are given power through statutes, but they are ALWAYS an administrative agency. Violations like speeding, disobeying traffic devices, etc. can be put in municipal and state statutes because they are civil violations against public safety. Inspections are a different ball of wax, particularly as they pertain to noise issues.

Also, an inspection sticker only signifies that a vehicle passes at the time of inspection. I would be very highly surprised if the State of Maine (or New Hampshire) decided to start enforcing laws ex-post facto. - The Supreme Court might have an issue with that as well.

Also, just FYI, Felonies and Misdemeanors apply only to criminal statutes and not rules or regulations.

I guess you don't get it. in NH they are going after the INSPECTION STATIONS

the Dept of Safety will sit a 1/4 mile down the road from a station, because inspections are now reported immediatly on line, the Dept of safety has reacords available immediately, it a vehicle doesn't pass, they will go after the station for putting a sticker on it.

YES they do impound vehicles for no other reason than it doesn't have a valid sticker, I've seen them do it with cages, theres no reason to beleive they won't do it with bikes.

Why do you think is was making a big deal 3 months ago when thes laws were in the legislature. and yes they are LAWS in the RSA's here in NH, not part of rulemaking (regulations)

I don't doubt that some of these laws are unconstitutional... so what, unless I have the money to appeal it don't make any difference. The MAN in effect gets away with what ever he wants.
