Yup another motard post...
But, I am looking at a 2001 yz426. This will be my first motard/dirt bike, so I dont have to much information on them. From the searching that I have done it seems that everyone suggests a 450 to become tarded. Will I be disapointed? I am looking for it to be on the street at first, but track days are on there way soon! So any information to offer? Commen problems with the bike?
The list of extras that are on the bike
17 inch exel rims, rear rims have been drilled and have bigger spokes.
michelen pilot slicks
upgraded front brake disc/brakes
twin air filter
speedometer
acerbis headlight kit
baja designs plate housing and lights (LEDS)
baja designs stator, high output lights never dim!
battery pack
also knobby rims and tires with seperate disc and sprockets, can change the bike to be ready for dirt in 20 minutes.
And the drilling of the rim??
He is asking $4,000 but I would hope to get it around $3,000
opinions??
You're in RI aren't you? Is the bike already plated? If not, you won't be able to get it plated for the street in this state.
426 vs 450...No, you won't be disappointed at all. It's probably only down 3-4 horse from the newer 450s, though it does have an extra 10lbs of fat.
$4k seems a bit high to me, I think if you got it for $3 and it was titled already and was in good condition, it would be an OK deal.
No real problems that I can remember with my old 426, it always started easy and never let me down. I've heard of the clutch baskets getting grooved up making a notchy clutch? Never happened to mine.
Keep the oil+filter changed, clean the oil screens every other oil change and it should just keep running and running
Drilling of the rims sounds odd, I've never heard or read about that before?
Yamaha
Sure am in RI. He say's that the bike was registered and inspected in Maine, also has the title. It is in Mass. where he is riding it, so I would assum that it could be registered in RI. Wrong?
The drilling of the rims to put in biggers spokes has me a touch nervous though....
As long as it has a Maine or Mass motor vehicle title, you should be good.
I don't know enough about wheel sets to comment to much about the spokes, that's a good question for The Junkie
Let me know if you get it, it's good street tarding weather now...but more importantly with those knobbies AND a street plate, it gives you access to a 60 mile trail loop in Pachaug State Forest just over the line in Ct![]()
Yamaha
mmm....legal off road riding. Now if I could take the ATV there I wouldnt be selling it this winter.
You need a street plate to ride Pachaug, though half the bikes I see in there don't have plates, never mind the riders being old enough to have a license
What kinda ATV do you have?
Yamaha
I have a 04 Honda Rancher 4x4ES. Wanna buy it?? $2,200
You will love a 426,one of the best 4 strokes ever, and that's coming from a KTM/Honda guy.Are you sure he drilled the rims?Usually they drill the stock hubs to lace up the Excels with, say,Buchannon spokes. My 19" dirt track wheels were laced to stock Honda hubs and drilled to fit the spokes, common practice, shouldn't have to worry, but doesn't hurt to ask opinions.Al
As a matter of fact, my neighbor is looking for a 4x4 quad. They are looking for something with a plow and trailer though, wouldn't happen to have that as well?
Yamaha
As a matter of fact I do...trailer anyways

Just hurry up and get it so you get get a few good hoons in before the salt hits the roads,it will kill you to look at all winter in anticipation.Just be sure to warm up those Pilots, they are like grease on cold pavement.Don't expect freeway runs, and you won't be disappointed.Street legal with a title and extra wheels and what you listed it had,it would be nice to get it for 3k,if it is a real clean one,you may have to meet him somewhere in the middle.Motards, titled and street legal already done if you live in the wrong state has a definate value, can't just base value on dirt bike values.JMO Al
that asking price does seem high to me as well, an 01 is getting pretty damn old and there are alot of 04-05 bikes for 4K. Hell i know a guy selling an 08 yzf450 for 3500 I believe and you could hten put another 1000-1500 into to motard it...but like posted above you need to figure out the whole street aspect and make sure the bike can be ridden legally.

I don't know if this is related but I have a friend who builds wheels for pro DH bikes and has drilled out the space between spokes to reduce weight.... Obviously there are significant disadvantages to this but I guess that's what you do for a few .001's of a second
Oooops n/m my comment

Definitely get more data on the rear rim drilled etc..... I have gone through a set of rear spokes on my KTM 560SMR... this is an important area for supermotard/trackday riding (sticky slicks/dot's) really torque the rear rim, spokes, and hub - bigger spokes (done right) is a good thing

Thanks for all the help guys. I am going to give him a call and see if he is willing to budge on the price. The lack of detail on the front brakes and rim drilling has me questionable. Almost tempted to wait a little bit and just buy a dirt bike a motard it myself. Would be a fun little project.
Figure if could get a bike for around $2,000 and put about a grand into it I could make a prettty good motard. Making it street legal in RI has me puzzled though.
What did all you motard guys out there have to do to get them on the street?(legaly)
I'm a loyal Yamaha guy but the most simple way to have a Motard on the streets legaly in RI is to 1. either buy used and already plated or 2. buy a KTMThe KTM exc's make awesome Motards and are awesome in the woods. Welcomed to try mine sometime if you'd like..
Unless you know somebody important at the DMV, you're not going to plate a offroad bike in this state on your own (unless it's a KTM). There's certain wording missing on the original MSO on new KTM's (found out today Aprilia's are the same way) that allows them to be registered.
Yamaha
the right Motard 16.5/17" RIMS, rotor, and caliper could run you +$2K easy.... then there's spacers, narrow chain, sprockets.....unless your are real lucky.....
as someone said...change the oil and clean screens...A LOT - I do both my Motards after each day of use.
and yes a great winter project!

So do you think a budget of $3,500 is out of the question to buy the bike and motard it?
You're not going to do it with new parts, that's for sure. If you find a good used dirtbike for the low$$$ and live on ebay until you find all the Tard parts, you may be close. Then you still have to sort out the lighting if you plan on street tarding...and anyone that has taken a MX bike and added the street lighting and components to make them function properly, knows it costs A LOT!!
That YZ price isn't looking so bad now is it
Can you buy a used YZ, Motard it and put it on the road for $3,500? No way!!!
edit... I'll tell my neighbor about your quad, that's what they are looking for
Yamaha
If you're planning to do the motard conversion yourself, then yes, that's a little short.
It's possible though.
Used bike for a good deal and some closeout parts or used parts and you could make something...
In that price range you're going to be better off finding something that's already been tarded out IMO

Seth's putting his race motard together (based off 07 CRF) for pretty short money.
I wouldn't go near a 01 YZF426 personally.
