Let me know, it's got dirtwheels on it now but can be changed over in less than 1/2 hour.
That's the key IMO is to be able to convert it back to dirt. An all out race Tard I can see that not being an issue but as a streetbike, trackday bike, and trail/MX/ice bike you'll be sure to get a 100% return for your money spent in year round fun![]()

In late September I saw an ad from a dealer in Pittsfield,Ma. had an 2006 560smr street legal, with extra dirt suspension and dirt wheels in the $4,500 range. You should try to search it out,he had it on consignment I think...If I didn't already have one,I would jump on it. BTW,a 2001 YZ-426 is a bit old,but they had to be one of the most bulletproof 4 strokes there was,and if you street ride it,that counts,And I ain't no Yamaha spokesman either.
The KTM dealers (dirt) didn't know what to do with the 06/07 SMR's and some deals were to be had. $4,500 set up with street stuff is a steal.. back then they had a price tag of $7+K in 08, KTMs went up about $1K and another $1K for the 09. An 07 exc450 could be had new for $6500 now in 09 looking at almost $9500K ouch!!!! (EXC makes a great dual sport ride - darn things weight the same as my yamaha wr250F and pul pull pull)
However I wouldn't recommend a 560SMR as regulasr ride.. they are race motors and need to be treated as such... wide open on track - pulled down every +20 hrs or so of hard track use. I have had mine rebuild twice.... within 50hrs. (first time welded and balanced the crank)
Second time crank roller bearings ate themselves - now have a crank mod that the KTM factory guys use(ball bearing floating races on both ends -no more roller bearings for me) - hopefully it will go longer this time...

All depends on the machine. A stock motored XR650 that's not geared super short should just require oil changes, occasionally, if doing so isn't going to impact your schedule or anything... A built to the nines CRF450 can eat valves, pistons, cranks, etc REAL quick. That's what draws me to the early Yamaha four strokes*, as long as you keep fresh oil in them, and don't build them too heavily, they seem to just keep going and going. Put in a cam chain every season when you tear down to inspect, and they should be problem free.
* Plus, with Yamaha having a bit of a head start, the early years are generally pretty cheap to get into, $1500 to $2000 depending on year and setup.

Buy a DRZ400 if you want something to ride around on and not do much to,be warned, they're heavy, and don't get out of their own way.Think of it this way,a good motard can put out 50-60+ hp.Imagine that hp in a 200-250 lb package,=fun!!!.If you like to stunt[I don't stunt],this Bud's for you. How long do you think a little engine like that will stay in one piece if you continously flog it?To me,they are the ultimate urban assault machine, even though I don't city ride.It is a welcome break from a sportbike, and they handle better than anyof them,if you ride it right.JMO,Al

No first hand experiance with any of these models but from what I've read (and if you dig, there's tons of info to back it up), the KTM 560SMR and the Aprilia SXV 06-07 are ticking time bombs in stock form, and the Honda CRF 450 has head/valve issues in some years.
I had a 00 YZ 426 and after 3 years of mx, trail and ice riding I motarded it and put it on the track. 2 trackdays in the fall of 2003 and raced 3-4 races each race weekend for the entire 04 season. I put oil+filters and gas in that bike and that was it.
Next was a 04 YZ450, broke it in at the last race weekend of 04 as a motard ice rode it all that winter, a double trackday at VIR in the spring of 05..I honestly thought it was going to pop at this track because I never let off on the straight and was topped out at the beginning of the straight, raced the entire 05 season and sold it to another NESR member who put some street miles on it. Again, oil+filters and gas...never a single issue.
My KTM 525 has been bulletproof as well. 6500 miles total, about 2,000 of those are dirt/trail miles, the rest are street and a couple open practice sessions at the LRRS weekends.
Oil+filters, gas, 3 valve adjustments and a counter shaft seal are the only things I've done.
Still going strong and looks good as well for the time on it

Sounds to me like you would be better off With a DRZ400. Its a perfect first motard with Huge aftermarket and BB support. They are worry free. I have owned and raced many fast and slow bikes, I bought a DRZ this smmer and its freaking awesome I modded it a little to get some more power. But for city riding and back road stuff it will really impress you. It will be better on the highway then a YZF and all you do is change the oil. if you ride it for a season or two then maybe bump up to a KTM or something.
And on the right road I can leave a gixxer for dead in a few corners

Not sure where your from but, were you able to get your xr street legal?
Yup, I'm in Mass. Pretty big run around, but I got it done. I can provide advice but not on an open forum. Check PM in a few mins.
