That's just awesome.
Thanks for posting Randy.
totally awesome, they have huge icy balls...I'm freezing just looking at it
RandyO - I'd imagine you would've ridden just as fast and as safe with your dark side tire and winter studded front??
Great stuff thanks Randy!

That's in-tents!
Reminds me of the night I spent in a made-by-me igloo up at Hidden Valley.
I've got to check but I think I know at least one of those nutters. There are a bunch of Ural / Chang enthusiasts in the Windham ME area who make it a point of riding in every storm just to show they can.
Not something I would (or could) do, but pretty awesome!
Thanks Randy! Thats awesome and could totally see you riding along with them ON TWO WHEELS!!!!

Sickness. On bikes nonetheless. I've camped out in the winter VIA snowmobile, but those guys take it a step further doing so with bikes.
Great story. Thanks for sharing.

That was awesome. I've done my share of winter camping in my younger days. It ain't so bad!
I have never winter camped in a tent that I can remember, but have hiked parts of Long Trail in winter, I remember at least a couple times staying in shelters near Camels Hump when it was below zero and trudging up the mountain on snowshoes

I've camped out with my son's Boy Scout troop the last four winters. The first two years the low was -5F, last year it was like spring, and this year it got down to about 5 but the wind was brutal. The second year the scouts built a snow cave, but they all bailed on sleeping in it except my kid. So we slept in it. It was awesome. Everyone else froze their butts off in their tents but the snow cave was toasty. OK, not toasty, but probably at least 25deg warmer than being in a tent. It had to be destroyed in the morning (no trace), and when the kids jumped on the roof they couldn't make it collapse. I was really hoping for snow this year, but no luck.
The worst part of the weekend is the anticipation leading up it, thinking about being out in the cold from Friday night until Sunday. But once we're out there, it's fun, and by the end of the weekend, I'm always thinking, "Yeah, I'll go again next year!"
That winter sidecar rally looks like a blast.

I've found the size of the structure maters. The one night I spent in an igloo as a scout SUCKED. It was cold as hell. We only had 3 kids sleeping in a space big enough to fit every scout AND adult leader from TWO rural town troops.
And I think the author of that article should have left the snow piled up on his tent. Snow makes for a good insulator.
We used to go winter camping once a year and it's no picnic. But with bikes during a nasty-ass snow storm? Forgetaboutit!
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
When I was in the scouts we had a winter camping trip coming up. One of the rules was that you needed a parent or guardian to participate with you. I asked my father who is a former Marine to do it with me. The look that he gave me was priceless and we ended up going because he felt bad for saying no at first.....
We lasted half of Friday night and said fuck it. We ended up at a HoJo for the night while my fellow scouts froze their asses off.

My dad never camped with us. He'd drop us off and be outta there by dark, leaving us with other leaders. But when you woke up in the AM he'd be couched up against a pine tree making coffee on that crappy little antique Coleman 1-burner he had, ready for the day.
"Sleep on the ground?! Fawk no! Did enough of that when I was your age, now I know better."
In his defense, his camping in the snow stories are twice as bad-ass as mine are.
