Alright, so I may be picking something up this weekend and riding it home from Rochester, NY...yep, 6 hour ride back. It's supposed to be in the 50s so it's going to be pretty cold...I plan on wearing my two piece Alpinestars suit, boots and motogp gauntlet gloves. I will also wear some under armour underneathe my leathers.
Do you think that is enough to ride for this long and in those temps? The biggest thing that I am worried about is my fingers. Do you think Gauntlets will be enough? If not, anyone willing to loan me some gloves that are supposed to be used in colder temps?
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
WIL
btw. I am driving up tomorrow with my gf at 2:30pm.
are they vented? I use a pair of A* Sp2's that have no vents and the do fine around that temp, once it goes below 50 i switch to my Olympia Cold weather gloves.
You should be ok IMO

Ride to live, live to ride
I have Alpinestars GP tech gloves, which are perforated. I've taken off at a balmy 46 degrees and rode 32 miles to meet up with others and my hands were cold, but weren't numb or getting worse.
Could you get a pair of liners under them? Get the UA liners, something really thin that will give you added protection. I have a pair of Leki glove liners and they actually go quite nicely under the GP techs.
Pick up some cheap snowmobile gloves or a quality pair of revit cold gloves. 50 is cold in my book for basic leather riding gloves, particularly for 6 hours.

Below 57 degrees and no hand protection you're gonna be chilly.
The latex gloves idea is ok but nitrile will be better for 6+ hours. Stick a few pairs in your pocket and change accordingly.
If you're heading out route 2 and have "M" sized hands, I do have some long gauntlet cold weather gloves you're welcome to use...or better yet, just give me 30$ and they are yours, I own a BMW with grip heaters...they are useless to me![]()
Either way, drop me a PM on here if interested, I'll drop you my ##...and try to remember to check this shit tomorrow before I leave for the office so I can find em and take them with me...

a pair of cheapo white glove liners will serve you well

50 & sun is ok, clouds not so good. Winter coat over suit keep your core warm. Or rain gear ta stop the wind..

Heres a condom. I figured since youre acting like a dick, you should dress like one too.
PM me if you need heavier gloves (A* vega size L), I'm in Framingham.
Rain gear works awesome on cold days. If you're concerned about how you look you can wear the rain gear under your leathers instead of over. For your hands, any sort of wind stopping glove over or underneath will do the same thing the rain gear does for the rest of your body. A turtleneck shirt of some sort will help fill the gap between your helmet and jacket. Think of your torso as the heater and your hands and feet being the farthest from the heat source. Keep your chest very warm, your arms and legs fairly warm and hopefully your hands and feet won't get cold.
Enjoy the ride!

Ok, I have a Goretex North Face with hoodie that I can wear over my 2-piece...I was actually thinking about wearing my Goretex snow pants too...do you think that would be a good thing to wear?
haha I just replied to the PM before I realized you're connected in Framingham![]()
Either way looks like you're cool, ride safely Wil and congrats on the new ride.
Yep, looks like I should be all set. I just put on most of my gear (minus the Under Armour) and I was crazy warm. The North Face Jacket and Pants over my 2-piece made it really warm. With the gloves, I should be all set. Thanks everyone and wish me luck! Hopefully my lower back is not completely shot after this ride. If all goes well and the bike looks good, then I will take some pics when I get home.
The bigger problem than the cold is rain -- and it's supposed to rain pretty much the entire weekend across northern NY and New England.
Dress warmly, wear rain gear, and take comfort in the fact that you're not going to be the only one getting wet. Three of us from Burlington are riding down to Maryland tomorrow on our way to West Virginia, the Great Smoky Mountains, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's looking like we'll be battling rain for at least the first 200-250 miles. Ugh.

Just get grip heaters... way cheaper and then you can wear your nice "race" gloves in any whether.
I've rode down to 17F with my Helds and been fine with the grip heaters on. $35 and an afternoon in the garage, worth every penny.
They take care of the rain issue pretty well too. Wet warm hands are a lot nicer then wet cold hands.
I do carry glove covers.. but even those leak a little in heavy rain. They leaked a bit in the thunderstorm tuesday, but the grip heaters kept my hands working.

Updates?
Update is that there are 60 mph winds right now up here in Rochester and I can feel the temperature dropping (It's supposed to be like 30 tomorrow morning). And to add to all this...there is a possibility of snow flurries tomorrow morning. The semi good thing is that the winds are supposed to be only 40 mph...
btw. when would you consider riding unsafe? I am wondering if this is the smartest thing to do tomorrow.
I ride year round including in snow so I say as long as your comfortable go for it. Are you taking back roads or slab?
I should have given you my heated vest.BTW the Texport gloves are warmer than the A*'s.
Thanks again for the offer Denno!
I don't think I'll be riding any bike home tomorrow. Still going to check the bike out and if everything looks good, the seller agreed to hold onto it until the lien release form gets to me and I get the bike registered and insured. Then I will come back up and ride it back.
You might be OK if you borrowed a heated jacket..
It is a long way to go without one in that temp range.. you're being smart considering it's a new bike.
I'm not sure where to find them, and I'm sure someone else could chime in, but when I was in the UK last week I saw riders using these (kevlar?) "bags" that attach at the handle bars
Think of putting a cloak on each handlebar, and to ride you slip your arm into each "cloak" and keep your hands underneath, on the bars the whole time.
can anyone chime in on what those are?
