Just got the 1050 Speed Triple SE, and I absolutely love it. Coming from my RC it was actually difficult to adjust to the more upright riding position, but it didn't take long, and I am so much more comfortable.
The S3 obviously doesn't have the LOW end grunt of the big twins, but its not really far behind. And, when the power kicks in, it really rushes in. Another legitimate consideration about the S3, the front wheel comes up VERY easily. I've considered getting clip-ons to try and make it a little more difficult to wheelie, but I'm going to stick with the bar for now, for comfort's sake.
Finally, I've still got the OEM exhaust, but I've heard aftermarket exhaust systems on the 1050 and I don't like the sound as much as the twins. Just something about the deep thump of the RC that I love.
So, big thumbs up from me regarding the Speed Triple.
Hyper
I have an FZ1. Love it. Smooth power and very comfy to ride yet still sporty.
+1 on that. the first few weeks I was actually scared going into turns because it felt so different. Once I figured it out I am loving it. Its been about 2+ months since I went RC to Brutale and I have definitely got my complete lean back.Coming from my RC it was actually difficult to adjust to the more upright riding position
I have two bikes...FZ6 for commuting and long distance and 696 with Termi for visceral fun. I vote Monster 1100 - great deals on them right now. I saw a new one for $8999 in NH. Super torque, much more comfortable than a 1098 and reasonable for a naked. It is not FZ1 comfy, but has a ton more usable torque and sex appeal. The new zed has a terrific motor, but the looks....you either like it or not (I don't). The europeans are all about nakeds (CBR1000R is gorgeous), yet we can't bring them here...
If you are looking for a Comfy commuter with some Punch, let me suggest a B-King. I traded my 999 for one because I simply didn't ride the Duc( I know that they are possibly the Ugliest production bike ever Built, but the get real pretty when you are looking over the Handle Bars and Turn the throttle!) They can be had out of the showroom at around 8500. They have a long chassis and enough weight to eat up the bumps. Brakes are incredible, in stock form you are getting about 161hp to the rear wheel and with slip ons 170hp (and about 100 foot pounds of torque) is easy. Because the Engine and tranny are Gen 2 Busa you have a very deep pool of after market go fast parts. If you are somewhere near South West New Hampshire drop me a note and you can take mine out for a spin see what you think. I love the thing.
I rode a b-king a few months ago. It has the most uncomfortable seat I've sat on on a production bike.
As far as saving money with the z1000, it actually lists for a couple hundred more than the speed triple, I think.
I like the new z1000 so much don't know if I could go with the older gen ones....
The B-king is more popular in Europe - I saw a bunch in the Alps this summer. Suzuki sells a gel-seat as well. I am sure it is a terrific bike, but to me it is just too massive (length, width, weight) which is the same reason I would never look at a BMW K1300R. Now, if the F800R was sold in the states....
Interesting Being a larger guy 6'2" 235 I find it quite comfortable Not as nice as my goldwing but very comfy. Guess you have to try them see what you like. I thought it was to wide to long and to massive as well ,, then I rode it I was very surprised.. took the bike back. Came back 3 days later and took the bike for a 2 hour test ride was really quite shocked at how well it handled . Since I already had a busa I wasn't surprised by the motor. I you like Nakeds my honest suggestion is ride a B King see if YOU like it. Don't ride it to be seen on and if you ride 2 up a lot it may not be for you (pillion is not comfy) but I was shocked by riding the bike, so I bought it. BTW the K1300s I just test rode was a MAJOR disappointed.

Can't go wrong with either in my mind!
The Zed is awesome though!

I've ridden mikes s2r and it was pretty comfy. So I imagine the 4 is similar. If I ever had the $ is get a 4

The thing is that Im not looking for a HP bike. No need for a Bking or Z1000 type I4.
On friday I sat on the new Monster, it was OK. I think id really need to ride it to get a sense. I also sat on the new multi.

I've got this DL1000 for sale. Twin. Custom carbon fiber all over it. Gsxr1k front end. VFR swinger. etc etc etc. Most custom in the world. Comfortable as hell! Low pegs with the woods bars make this thing a dream to ride. I will not ride another bike with clipons as anything beside a track bike . . . ever.
I ride a custom fighter!
Interesting...if that's the case I'd say you really need to take the M1100 for a spin. You won't be sorry. If HP were inconsequential, that'd probably be my choice. It really just felt right. I'm personally looking forward to trying the new M796, but something tells me the 1100 would still be my favorite.

I rode the new monster 696 recently. Fun bike, comfortable, handled well, just didn't have enough power. I didn't care for the brakes; perhaps different pads or bleeding could fix that. Also the clutch was very hard to modulate. I'm thinking there was air in the line though. It also vibrated like crazy unless you were on the gas hard. It was a demo bike however and it had probably been beat on a lot.
