Spend some cake on a nice pair of race boots (AND GLOVES *cough* Held *cough*), you won't regret it. I'd prefer something that slides (a race boot) than something that's not going to slide (a work boot). You can easily snap an ankle or a shin when you're Wally-world work boot catches the ground than you would when a race boot hits the ground.

I've got a pair of black/perf'd Sidi Vertigo's which I love. They tighten up nicely on your calves and have nice ventilation on the outter part of the boot. Mine were ~$275 from metric bikes . com (can't post a link yet, doh)

I like the short boots because i can wear them at work for the day, they don't offer the protection of a full race boot but better than sneaker. I've been looking at the Sidi escape boots but currently wear Dianese Ago Estivas which are insanely comfortable. Gloves, love my new gauntlet rev-it perforated, could not find a pair of Helds that fit well always too long in the thumb and pinky.

Yes. Just get the race boots since one day you'll probably end up at the track anyways. Why buy boots twice unless you outgrow them or wear them out.

+1 To this. I went my first two years with ankle-reinforced hiking boots, because that is all I could find in my size before the MSF class. They treated me well, and even though they weren't designed for riding (and I never "road-tested" them), they saved my ankle from bruising/twisting/rolling in a tip-over that landed on my leg. I was badly bruised about calf-height on the inside of my leg and my thigh. But, now I have a pair of A* that I got used from a fellow rider and I can't believe I went so long without motorcycle-specific boots. Just how they feel is worth the time effort and $$. Sorry, storytime over.

sidi vertigo - riding boots are my favorite gear investment, so comfy- i wear them to work as well - they look like black shoes when you wear pants... plus the ladies love em....not really though

The B-2's are super comfortable.

As far as Set Up boot go, if I remember correctly, these are also made by Sidi, so you can't go wrong with the quality. And you definitely can't go wrong with the price of the Visions at $130.

Something is better than nothing. And also when it comes to gear, you should buy stuff that you'll actually wear.

I got a pair of over the ankle boots... halfway up my calf... it was really weird at first, because I was used to hiking boots. But I figured a broken ankle wouldn't be much fun (and I didn't like the feel of hiking boots anyway). I'm still kinda gettin' used to boots, but I feel better with some ankle protection.

Wow....hoped I had seen your post before PM'ing you earlier. By the way, they ARE over the ankle boots. What would have been the point to buy them for my husband otherwise. He wear them once (once!) and said he prefer his sneakers. I like my calf-high boots, but eventually I'd like to get over the ankle boots for city riding/just around the house outtings.

I got some Sidi Champions on clearance at New Enough. They offer a lot of protection, are waterproof (something to think about on the street), but are still just a plain black boot so you can hide them under jeans and not look like you just got out of a speed racer cartoon. They also have a lot more of a sole than race boots, so if you take your bike somewhere you can actually walk around for a while.
