Well today I went out to Greater Boston Motorsports to get an inspection sticker for my new plate (my previous one was stolen), and also to buy some oil and wash my bike.
While I'm washing my bike, some clouds form above my head and start to drizzle (it happens about 80% of the time I wash my bike at GBM). I soon finish and decide to race by the cloud and make it to the patch of blue sky before some more serious rain hits.
On Mass Ave. on the way back I am going faster than usual, ranging from 40mph up to 60 at one point. I wasn't just speeding for the heck of it, sometimes to move around cars and catch the next light. So as I just pass a few cars, I accelerate to about 55-60 when out of the corner of my eye I see an arlington police car parked on the side of the road under a tree. I immediately tuck behind the car I was going to pass on the right and then steer off to the curb (this is happening as I see him pull out after me without his blues on, just headlights).
I park the bike, kickstand down, turn everything off and by that point he's parked behind me and switches his blues on. Take helmet off and he opens the door and walks up.
His face was a "what the fuck is going on", and he asks "what's goin on buddy?"
I say- "I apologize, I..."
Him "you were doin 55 back there".
Me- "I'm sorry, I just left the dealer- I was there washing my bike and I was just trying to get ahead of the rain and get home, I..."
Him- "do you have your license? just let me see your license."
Me- "can i get off the bike?" (since I was struggling to take my wallet out sitting)
Him- "yea, just show me your license- then I want you to get the heck outta here"
enough narration- I offered to show my registration, while I pulled it out the receipt for the oil I bought flew out and he stumbled after it while saying, no just slow down buddy, get outta here- and gave me my license back.
Sorry for the long ass story, but I was surprised and actually curious what would happen since I started pulling over before he even turned his car on. I think he was pretty shocked. Really nice guy, and it's not like I was being absolutely reckless. Mass Ave is wide and has a lot of space for a bike. You can see for a mile down the road in most sections and I wasn't going crazy.
Just thought I'd share, maybe convince a few more that not running is usually the best idea. From a psychological perspective, I started pulling over just as he was probably deciding what he was going to do (It's logical to assume that most officers decide- maybe subconsciously even- what they're going to do within fractions of seconds after noticing the violation, i.e. i'm gonna give that asshole a fatass ticket vs. is he pulling over already? that's strangely nice... I should give him a warning). Might not be actually going through his/her head like that, but depending on what they feel as they observe the violation, it probably has a huge effect on how they react.
I'm done.

Cool story....
...other similar threads seem to indicate that this kind of behavior often surprises the 50 and defuses what might have become a tense situation since they probably expect you to run...
good going!!!

The one time I've been pulled over on my bike I was courteous and honest with the officer and it ended up being AOK.
Well fuck me and my bad luck.
Though I will say that one of the reasons the VT boys said they were letting us go was how nice and friendly we were with them![]()

Mass Ave is great...
...for gratuitous wheelies and running from the policia.
Yeap, never any point in being a dick to them. They just might let you go
When you're nice it makes it easier for you if you decide to fight it.
Glad the Arlington guy let you go, there ARE some nice ones out there.

Well staties get bonuses for writing tickets so if your thinking you're going to get out of one on the highway....its unlikely.

you can be nice but what if you don't have proper license? then you shouldn't be on the bike ya i know. just saying it's easy to be calm when you have everything. it's really just luck. i got nailed last yr for illegal pass by state trooper and all i got was lecture. he said i've been riding for awhile and i should know better. i do but it was safe to me.
"fuckit!"
Most cops are not assholes unless you give them a reason to be. If you were pulling a wheelie below the posted speed limit your ass would probably be being violated right now
Since when? I got pulled over by a trooper for doing 60 in a 30, which was BS. Technically he could have arrested me for driving to endanger but all he did was bitch me out for 15 minutes and told me if he ever saw me again he would nail me, should have brought him up on sexual harassment charges.

that's messed up.
yeah mass ave is nice for wheelies as mentioned before, but on the ride back I was concentrated on getting home as fast as possible.

Enjoy your get out of insurance-debt for free card.
I don't have the statistics handy, but I'd say 99.871462389% of times that happens you will have a ticket instead.

i train my dog with quite a few cops and they always tell me if i get pulled over on th bike be as polite as possible, cuz most cops think kids on sport bikes are punks and get out of the car ready for an altercation. so being nice off the rip might confuse the fuck out of them and you could get off or just kick ya plate up give them the finger and run hahahaa

55 anywhere on mass ave is fucking quick... there's a lot of traffic. I'm surprised you didn't get a ticket. Lucky!

I'd say they let me go 70% of the time I get pulled over. And I have a few under my belt. Actually, staties have been nicer than most of the town cops I've 'met.'
15 bucks. Riverside is a bunch of assholes compared to GBM! First time i got my sticker at GBM it was 5 mins before they were closing, they did the inspection gave me my sticker, let me mount my steering damper, AND let me wash my bike. Then I got my plate stolen and replaced it with a new one and went to Riverside first to see how it was- I got there about 10 minutes before closing, asked for a quick inspection- 2 guys stare at me like I'm some UFO that just landed, and then one guy walks around the bike and says- "you don't have blinkers", i say they're integrated and blink them at him. He's like, sorry I can't do it.
Then I ask- can i please wash my bike at least? I could hear the pressure washer out back. He replies saying- you know, we're closing... I then reply, no problem- you know GBM took great care of me 5 minutes before closing, I'll head over there next time and make sure never to come back here- thanks (in my head I added go fuck yourself, but it translated to a smile on my face).
rant over.
i know right?? good thing we did because it had been on my mind during some rides and because of that I reacted quickly. I lucked out and it worked this time.

My overall experience in all encounters with LEO's has been positive.
I pull over ASAP, am polite and courteous. That goes a long way
the only time i got pulled over they imponded my shit. 50 in a 35. cop was a detective who was having a bad day. overall if you are cool to them they will be cool to you and the ones who are dicks and ticket for the sake of ticketing, just bring it to court. i have never lost a ticket i went to court for.
Anyone else would have ended up impounded; bike towed hanging from a wrecker; license ripped in half by the cop; tazered in the left tit; locked up until 8am 1st call tommorrow morning; and all alone with bubba in a dark cell at 12:58am covering your back door (instead of writing this thread). Just be happy with how it turned out. We would hate to see you show up at a ride wearing a tight t shirt knotted above the belly button.
