seriously considering getting a dirt bike. problem is i dont think i know as much as i think i do about them. what i DO know is i want a 4 stroke 250. bike is gonna be primarily a woods bike.
i thought i had my heart set on something that would be street legal like a WR250R but now im not so sure. id like an electric start but its not a deal breaker.
with the big 4 being so close what are my advantages/disadvantages to each. if you have experience with any then i want to hear it. im really leaning toward yamaha (YZ or WR) and honda (CRF or CRFX) at the moment but i want some opinions.
the wife has even told me that i can sell her GSXR or trade it to get one.i just dont think i can do that to her.
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...

Why are you not considering the king of woods bikes? The great pumpkin?

my buddy picked up a crf 250x this spring. it doesn't have a ton of nut compared to a 450, or probably a 250r for that matter, but it has plenty of torque and did really well in the WV mountains this spring. my buddy is that guy who can and will kill anything with an engine, and the honda is holding up really well so far.
Not to be that guy that recommends something that you aren't looking for...but I bet you'd love a 300 like Chip rocks.

What's the draw of the 250f? How do you know you want one? The list is long for the advantages of two stroke euro bikes over the 4 stroke jap bikes in a woods riding enviroment. I love my 250/300 and I can't imagine riding anything else, except maybe a ktm 200
ive ridden a CR250 in the woods. while i had fun, it wasnt the right bike for me. for numerous reasons it showed me i wanted a 4 stroke. not to mention i dont really have the tools, time, space or patience to be rebuilding a top end every X amount of time. Chip swears by his KTM 300 2 stoke and i really value his opinion, but i just cant bring myself to buy a 2 stroke.
KTM isnt out of the question, they are just harder to find used. i also dont know the difference between their 250/350 XC-F, XC-W, or XCF-W. the 350 4 stroke has piqued my interest though.
trust me. a 4 stroke dirt bike goes over like a fart in church here at home. the wife likes 2 strokes and riding on a track. shes not a 4T fan. just means she wont want to ride it![]()

That was the 2 stroke before KTM got a hold of it. A CR250 is nothing like a KTM woods smoker. Seriously. If you don't try one you are doing yourself a huge disservice. There is a reason why woods races and enduros are flooded in a sea of orange...
You don't have to rebuild any more often than a jap 4 stroke and don't have any valve adjustments to deal with.

What he said!^^
100+ hours on riding on a two stroke with nothing but oil changes and cleaning the airfilter. Then when it is top end time 300$ in parts and 3-4 hours of labor (for an inexperienced mechanic) with tools you can find in a generic mechanics tool set.
As far as the KTm 200/250/300 feels electric compared to a cr250.
you may be right smutty, but unfortunately i have never and probably will never get a chance to ride one.
the fact is people dont tend to have extra dirt bikes to lend out for people to ride. so the only experience i have on any dirt bike is a 98 CR250.

Oxx, I'll let you know once I get a new front tire on and you can borrow my 400EXC.
She's a big girl but pretty nimble in the woods.

i dont know what that means but ok
400 2 stroke? that may be more power than im willing to wrangle.
dont forget that this will be my first dirt bike...ever. ive ridden 1 dirt bike in my life. i should also mention that unless the power delivery of the 2 stroke has changed, im not a fan of how they put down power.

400 4 stroke
My KX250 (2 stroke) was my first dirtbike... Thing was a motocross beast but the power delivery was VERY very linear. Went like stink up top but still pulled hard like a tractor down low.

The 300 can go looooong times between top ends. Like 100+ hrs if run like a woodsy weapon, and with good premix.
I'll put my feelers out and see what I come back with, and you're more than welcome to ride mine whenever.
Edit: before I stretch those feelers too far, what's your budget and time frame?
I like Feyonce, for the record. It reminds me of this:

Ox if you come up to the rock pile MX track Saturday you're welcome to try my 350 sx-f. I might even have some MX gear that might fit you (pants/jersey).

doing top ends really isnt something i want/can do. at least not easily. i dont have the work space. used KTMs 300s seem to be in the same price range at jap 4T 250s but im still not sold on 2Ts. ugh..premix.
gotta work and not sure a MX track is the best place for me. thanks though
