Get a cr500 already?
J/k...how tall/fat are you and what's ur budget

if im riding your bike then i cant ride with you...because im on your bike.
not sure. $3k is prob my limit but would still have to come up with the cash and it would obviously depend on the bike. buying new has crossed my mind with decent financing rates and most with a rebate up to $1k, but paying $7k for something im gonna throw on the ground or crash into a tree is hard to swallow. id much rater buy used. ive spotted a couple WRs and CRFXs in the $2k area.
im 6-2, 240#. thats why i wanted a 4 stroke. torque. but apparently everyone here wants me to have a 2T

If I had a 2pos trailer, there wouldn't be a problem.
Torque?! Maybe I haven't been clear about the 300...it's a torque monster. (Yes, it'll still scream up top). That's why it's so good, you can just chug the shit out of it. Or keep it grumbling along and tiptoe through the tulips quite rapidly.

Being as fat and big as you are, you may want to forget about the 250 thumper and go with a 250cc+ smoker, or a 450cc+ thumper...though a lard ass like yourself, maybe a KTM 530?
edit... +1 on the smokers..it's really not a pain in the ass at all to take care of. You're welcomed to try my KTM 200 smoker if you want to drive down here..I can ride the quad and watch you try and keep up!

That 200 is sick Oxx. Two smoke for the woods, leave the 4T's for the motos.
Maybe KB would let me take his bike and I could chaperone...

The one from Maine would be top of that list for me. Cheapest, newest, and the suspension is done.

IMO- It is all personal preference. My 1994 CR250 was an *amazing* woods bike. I was much faster, and much more comfortable on it than I was on any KTM300 I have ever spent time on (several). My current 350EXC is pretty wild, but I still cannot manhandle it around like I could my KDX200's. For straight up woods use, it is tough to beat the 200cc 2-strokes. Just set 'em up, and tune 'em to do what you want 'em to do, and you will never need any more than that.
I keep repeating this but, in the woods, less is more. Even for a 200lb guy like me. When the trail gets truly nasty, you will wish that you were on a KX/YZ/CR/RM 80!
OTOH - My Cr500 was an amazing woods bike as well, once you could learn to ride it well, but I would never recommend one to a novice. I raced it at Union one year, and did fine with it. My hands were severely blistered, and I doubt that I ever got past of 3rd gear.
Personally, for a dedicated woods bike, I would steer away from anything "F". The only reason I own my EXC-F is for street-ability. There is just no good reason to own/ride one, when the 2-stokes offer less weight, less expense/maintenance, and less initial investment. A good 200 is just like a good 125 - with the bottom of the power band filled in. Above a 250, things just get vibe-y, and herky-jerky off idle (read: stalling), with no real benefit anywhere else. This does not hold so true if one lives/rides in wider open spaces, but around these parts, it is pretty much what I have found.
Wow using a '98 Cr250 to come to judgement about 2strokes. That's funny, as that was my previous bike. I hated riding it in the woods but did so for almost 10years. Harsh, unforgiving, with a hit like a sledge hammer. I replaced it with my Ktm 250xc-w and haven't looked back. It's smooth and torquey. Absolutely night and day from my CR.
If your heart is set on a 4t, I'd wait around for 400xc-w, especially at your size and weight. I love riding my buddy's, and they're bulletproof.
my fear is that if i get a 400+ 4T that it will be too much. id rather start smaller and figure out not only if dirt bikes are something im even interested in and figure out what i need/want from a bike. im in uncharted territory. thats why i was thinking some sort of street legal dirt bike so i could tool around from spot to spot and ride on dirt roads in the area, but have something woods capable.

I was in the same place as you about a year ago, having no dirt experience and never owning one. Was a little nervous about riding/maintaining a 2T. Picked up an '04 200EXC last January, love the bike, awesome woods machine, great power delivery. I had never turned a wrench on a 2T, bought a Wiseco top end kit off Ebay and did the top end in about two hours. Simple simple shit.

If you come up to rock pile saturday you can take my KDX for a spin while I'm catching my breath. Not as new or fancy as the the KTMs but you'll be pretty amazed how she handles. I was, its like a big mountain bike with a ton of pull and no pedaling.
It'll change your mind about 2T, I still don't have feathering the clutch down right because I get to cheat so much with it. And Jay rode the thing with no clutch lever all the way home through some gnarly shit.
A valve adjustment requires no tools?

Sounds like its time to quit pussy footing around and buy a used CRF250R.
A dual sport (like my drz) will leave you wanting more. If you have no intentions of putting plates on it, just grab a 250 4t race bike close to full depreciation and ride. Simple, right?
I went to MMI I know what Im doing here chief
Oxx,
You keep saying you won't have the money/tools/space to do any work to a 2T but what I don't think you realize is that a 4T also takes maintenance that includes money/tools/space! Typically more so than a 2T. 2T bikes are bottom line simpler machines maintenance wise. If anything catastrophic happens it is typically only a few hundred dollars to fix. A 4T goes boom and it could cost you close to what you would have to pay for another bike to fix the motor. Ask me how I know, lol.
Any of the woods based 2T are going to be the bike you want. I own a 4T woods bike and it works for me but I keep thinking about getting rid of it and grabbing a 2T. My issue is I'm a cheap bastard and I own the bike I have so why go buy something else. You on the other hand are starting fresh. Listen to the people that are trying to help you and try to figure out a way for you to get out on a modern woods 2T. Couple of people will let you ride their bikes even if it means taking turns sitting in the lot for a little while, take them up on it.
www.nedirtbikes.com typically has some decent bikes pop up for sale if you haven't checked there yet.
Stop being a Sally and git 'er done so we can ride!
