It was my old nemesis, crank flex and whip. The flywheel side crank arm fatigues over time and eventually snaps. Sometimes quickly, sometimes it lurks for awhile as was the case with this engine. If it breaks before the cam sprocket the now free floating flywheel will usually whack the ignition pickup and maybe ding a couple wires, easy fix. If it breaks between the cam sprocket and the crank the collateral damage list is huge, and that's what happened this time.
I'm digging now to see if I can somehow solve the whip problem without capping my motor's output too much.
