    I've always used brake cleaner.

    1.) Cut off old grip
2.) Clean bar with brake cleaner thoroughly
3.) Saturate bar and spray BC into grip
    4.) Slide on while twisting
    5.) Safety wire both grips
6.) Wait a few hours for the BC to evaporate
    Done and works every time.

Keeping them from turning while you are riding...ie. slipping. Which isn't necessary if you use hair spray, spray paint, or grip glue. Which is why I use hair spray. No safety wire.

I don't use pro grips anymore they wear out in like a season and a half for me if I'm lucky. I have galindos super bike grips on there now and like them quite a bit. They also have nice groves for your wire and they are a little larger in diameter than the pro grips so they are more comfy for my big hands.

All of the above for grips that either won't get wet, or won't have a ton of force applied to them (like a streetbike).
For a dirty or track bike, glue and safety wire, all the time. There's nothing worse than a spinning grip when your trying to hold on for dear life.

I have them on my bike. I needed something quick before the season started and that's all Bettencourts had. I don't like them very much. For a streetbike they'd probably be good though.

Yeah? Come play in the woods, bin it in some water, and then try and hang on while both grips have throttle-grip. Oh yeah, don't forget, I'm throwing that thing around like wethefuckingpeople.

    Re: Putting grips on

For dirt riding I have found that everything except crazy glue or grip glue with safety wire will come loose once the grips get good and wet. Hair spray, WD-40 (let sit over night), and spray paint all work OK, but only for a little while.

I'm just going to put the grips on, and then drill two holes through the grips, the bars, and back through the grips and bolt the bastards in place.

What chip said, for street and track I always wire my grips and even if you aren't holding on for life it helps keep them from slipping while loading/unloading a bike off of a truck or trailer.

Compressed air and they are on in about 2 seconds.

    Easiest thing to do.
