I don't rip around everywhere I go, but i got a $170 dollar and 3 point ticket already this year for doing 47 in a 35....at that rate, it pays itself off pretty quick
I got one about a month ago and lets just say that its been helpful on a few occations
devlin if you get one, im always riding with you. 5pts ticket for me already this year as you know.

in my opinion they get you in more trouble than theyre worth. half the time they dont work and if you happened to get pulled over and the officer notices it, I think you'd be a lot more likely to get a ticket...
can any of the LEOs comment?

well just about every time i've gotten pulled over i get a ticket....so i really dont have much to lose
i would recommend getting either a passport or valentine 1, i have the escort passport 9500ix and i have picked up cops from over 2 miles away, they make a gps mount that goes on your gas tank and you can wire it right into your running lights from your blinkers so it would turn off with the bike, i am in the process of doing it to my bike, pm me if you want some help with it or whatever

Let me know how it works out for you. I would much rather buy one of those radar detectors rather than this one because of quality. I was just attracted to this one because it is made specifically for a motorcycle. Its not as big and bulky as the car ones are.
I'll be interested to see how you finish it off/how it feels while your riding
i have had it mounted to the bike before, i superglued the dash mount to my windscreen, worked great, only hard part is hearing it so you need to run headphones from the headphone jack to your helmet somehow or buy that light piece that they sell, its like 50 bucks and i just assume 2 dollar ear buds work the same. it worked awesome on the bike, i just didnt have it hardwired like i will and didn't have it on the nice sturdy mount like i am going to have it on now

I have a 8500 certainly helped me many times
The 9500 has more power and GPS sp after it learns a route it will stop falsing once it learns. There is also a gpr list of speed cameras programmed in I think.
Cops have certainly seen it and I have been let off with a warning. More about your attitude then your equipment. Also in the mountain twisties ON radar is the normal for LEO's.

I've used a Valentine 1 for a couple years. Hardwired in electrically but wedged/suction cupped to the underside of the windscreen. The suction cups aren't sticking to the windscreen so well any more (they get pretty well distorted trying to conform to the curved windscreen). I'm going to go with velcro this year.
It works well when coming into a town/slow speed area but with loud pipes and wind noise I can't hear it above about 60mph.
The only time I've been pulled over with it on the bike the bike was shut off and my helmet was off and sitting on the tank before the officer got out of his car. He may have seen it but didn't comment.

I sometimes use my Valentine 1 on my V-Strom, depending on where I'm going -- I'll usually take it along on longer rides and when touring, unless I'm going to Canada where radar detectors are illegal.
I highly recommend the V1 over other radar detectors because it will tell you how many radars are active, what band they're operating in, and what direction they're coming from. With a little bit of practice it becomes pretty easy to tell if the radar source is almost certainly a cop or probably just an automatic door somewhere nearby.
By the way, if you use a radar detector as justification for serious speeding, you're playing with fire. No radar detector is infallible, and a lot of cops, especially on highways and major roads, use lasers. Laser detectors only tell you when you've actually been targeted (ie, it's too late) unless you get really lucky and pick up some scatter off a car just ahead of you (possible, but unlikely).
I prefer to think of a radar detector as a device for increasing my situational awareness. I don't speed excessively with it (ie, I try to stay less than 15mph over), I just use it to warn me of upcoming situations that could prove dangerous and/or expensive. The advance warning lets me prepare for the possibility of upcoming stopped/very slow traffic, or simply give me time to make myself as invisible as possible by getting in the right lane, blending into traffic, etc.

I'll look into the passport and valentine detectors a little more. I certainly don't want to use super glue to secure it to the wind screen, is there another way to secure it thats a little more reliable than the suction cups? I would hate to lose a $400 dollar radar goin down the highway
On my other bikes i made a little platform from sheet metal bent and attached to the mirror mount screws outside the bubble.
Used good pcs of velcro to attache and ran lines up to side.
When I left the bike or it rained i could just pop it off and slip in a pocket.
Regardless good solid Velcro worked fine never fell off up to 177 MPH in the wind stream.
FYI check Ebay, Escort has a store, refurbished W/factory warranty I picked up an 8500 X50 for $199.

good call on the refurb radar detector! i didn't even know they did that with them
i have this on my 08 cbr1000 ---- it is a great unit, seems pricey but well worth it--it is beyond simple to wire it in + also comes with a visual led alert. as for the laser detection, it picks it up very well + lets u know if there is any laser being used in the area--so no it is not to late 2 hit the brakes when detected because a bike is much harder to pinpoint target than a car
I feel that haveing a radar detecter gives a false feeling of security if you try to depend on it .
The only thing they are really good for is to make you more aware of your speed. you here it go off the first thing you do is sloe down and check the speedo..
spend your money on a lawyer after you get the ticket... at the end of the season add it up .. then put that much money towards track time next year when your license is still suspended,,

I have a Passport 8500 that is mounted using a Ram mount. I also have a LED Flasher installed in my helmet that communicates with the radar detector and flashes in my peripheral view then the detector is going off. It works really well and I don't have to worry about hearing or looking at it. While I don't rely on it all the time, It has helped out on more that a few occasions.
