Cyclist collides with logging truck in Farmington

FARMINGTON — A man riding a motorcycle struck a logging truck shortly before 1 p.m. and sustained serious injuries. The accident occurred near the Big Apple on Route 11. The man was transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, including a reported compound fracture.
Emergency personnel had called for a life flight but decided to transport the driver to Frisbie because of the amount of time it would take to fly a chopper to Farmington.
Route 11 was shut down in both directions, from Pike industries to Route 153 and the Rochester city line. Parts of Route 11 have since reopened.
The cyclist is reportedly in his 20's. Police are investigating whether he had a license.

Yeah, first report was of an m/c & logging truck w/ medivac on the way. Later I heard it was just a broken arm, was wearing a helmet, etc. At first report though, you were the one person I knew that could possibly hit a logging truck in Farmington!![]()

EJ Hersom/Staff photographer Grass hangs off a motorcycle that was involved in an accident on Route 11 in Farmington.
FARMINGTON — A man in his 20s was seriously injured after he struck the rear of an empty logging truck and was knocked off the motorcycle he was driving near Marie's Restaurant on Route 11 Wednesday afternoon.
Police, firefighters and emergency personnel responded around 1 p.m. after the man on the eastbound Suzuki struck the back corner of the eastbound logging truck — operated by Sweet Forest Products in Strafford — as it was turning left into the Irving gas station.
"The motorcycle actually ghost ran — it actually stayed up," Police Chief Scott Roberge said, noting the bike continued through a parking lot for about 300 feet before coming to a stop.
Roberge said it appears the man, who was driving erratically, did not have a valid motorcycle license and the motorcycle was not registered to him. He added police will look into this more as part of the investigation
Detective Brendon June said witnesses told police the motorcyclist was weaving in and out of the lanes and passing other vehicles at the intersection when he hit the back of the truck.
"It clipped the rider," June said, adding the victim was wearing a helmet, "which probably saved his life."
The identities of the drivers were not released Wednesday afternoon since the family notifications had not been completed. Late Wednesday evening police were still not releasing the names of those involved.
Fire Chief Richard Fowler said the man was seriously injured and a Lifeflight helicopter was requested since he was unconscious and had sustained a compound fracture. Fowler added he called off the helicopter and decided to have Frisbie Ambulance crews transport the man to Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, because the flight would take too long to get to the scene.
When asked if the injuries sustained were life threatening, Fowler said they'd have to wait to see.
"We're lucky the bike didn't hit other vehicles when it kept on going," Fowler said.
The driver of the truck was uninjured.
June said he did not have an update on the man's condition since he had not had the chance to speak to hospital officials as of 4 p.m.
Rochester's mobile crime scene van and members of the regional technical accident reconstruction team, including officers from Middleton, Dover and the Strafford County Sheriff's Office, responded to assist investigators.
Members of N.H. Department of Transportation inspected the logging truck, police said.
Route 11 was shut down and traffic was backed up for miles in both directions until New Durham police detoured eastbound traffic at the Route 153 intersection, Farmington police turned around westbound traffic at Pike Industries and Rochester police turned around eastbound traffic at the Route 11 Wal-Mart in Rochester.
Route 11 was partially reopened around 3:30 p.m. while investigators remained at the scene.
