Just curious, Does any one know what the threshold of time is before doing damage to a motor, keeping it pinned at redline? Granted there is a rev limiter on most modern sport bikes but how much punishment can the motors from Honda and Yamaha really take when the revs are held close too, or at redline??![]()
Where's Pete and that article of the zx6r being reved at redline without oil untill holes formed in the exhaust when you need it?
gimme a few![]()

Another stupid thread !![]()
actually not a stupid question. My racebike is run exclusively at or near redline, as are most. Mine has no valves though![]()
Suzukis are notorious for breaking valves (retainers and stems) within a seaon or two. Hondas and Yams last longer, though they have other problems. 2nd gear on Yams is notoriously weak. Hondas just plain lack the power to be unreliable![]()
All kidding aside, a racebike run at the top level should be rebuilt every season (2,000 miles). Average club guys can run 4-5 seasons without troubles in some cases.
Random trips to redline for street riders generally do nothing to hurt reliability.

Dirty little secret
Manufacturers of streetbikes pretend to believe that because using the bike at the bikes full potential (redline) would break the law then no one is actually doing that.
Therefore it is really reliable I would guess at like1/2 or 2/3 redline.
my yzf valves were all toast at 16000 not the 26000 miles check they recommend. Should have been opened up at 12000.
I have also seen many Cali commuter bikes with 50 K plus and no one has ever never really been inside.
My gixer will be valve checked at around 10K I have no experience with the life expectancy of Ti valves. I also don't have the room to flog it like the old Yammy![]()
