Routes to CA?

Thinking of helping my dad drive to California in Sept.
Never done this before.

Looking quickly at some maps tells me that there
are 3-4 main routes across the to CA.
A little nervous about the shitbox my dad had for transport.
Someone told me that getting over the Sierra Nevadas out of Salt Lake City are pretty deadly.

What are good routes across?
I see there is another route north thru Montana...
Any input is welcome.

Oh and if you have any mandatory stops along the way

We have a bit of time to stop and slack at least a few different times.

where in cali are you going? im moving to friday and we are going from boston - rochester ny - chicago - wisconsin - minnesota - wyoming - reno - san fran. Reason we are making these stops is we basically have friends or family in those areas. there are alot of different routes you can take. depends on where in cali your going

as for mandatory stops, we decided on those by watching the food network's man vs food or other shows like that. this way you never get stuck with shitty food

I've done route 80 all the way. It's pretty dull across Nebraska, but won't be as hot as the southern routes. Coming out of SLC is no big deal, I suspect you meant the Sierra Nevada mountains on the CA/NV border area, it's a long drive from SLC to there.

Laramie WY seemed like a cool place. Chicago is an awesome town, I recommend being a tourist and going to the Navy Pier, if the weather is nice. Wendover UT/NV (the town is in two states) is a nasty place, but you'll be happy to see it since there's no ther towns for a shockingly long way in either direction. The bonneville Salt flats just east of Wendover are really cool to see, for the first half hour. Then it gets kinda old. Northern Nevada is mazingly desolate, but not unattractive.

Bring music or books on tape to listen to. There's a huge area west of SLC with absolutely no radio stations.

Yeah I'm thinking I might splurge on a little hand held XM Radio which I can connect to the cassette player on my dad's car. Yes cassette recorder... gives you an idea about how old his car is. Its got near 200,000 miles. Tried to get him to do the cash for clunkers I was pushing the Honda Element which would be styling compared to his 95 Odyssey, but he's stubborn and cheap.
