Anyone familiar with these old 'wings? A family member moved down south and had a 2011 Goldwing waiting for him down there. Before he moved this one was given to me. It's an 84 Aspencade. I brought it home around the first of November. Rode it around for most of the month on what was left of the old reg and insurance. Pretty cool bike for being 30 years old. Cruise control, radio, heat, intercom etc. Handles pretty well considering it weighs about as much as a DeLorean. Only thing I have done to it is removed that hoky ass light bar around the rear trunk and the broken driving lights. She cleans up nice with a little wax on the paint and some chrome polish.

They are cool old bikes. They will smoke a bit when started because the left cylinder/head gets excess oil.
Go through the suspension. I think the rear is air adjustable on the 84, might need some rework.
Change all the fluids (make sure you do the brake fluid). Check the braking system. They GL braking system is notoriously complicated (and I'm not sure on this model) but make sure each cylinder will actuate.
Ride it.
Don't know much about it, but looks like a blast to ride long distances!
Darkside that rear tire?

My old man had a 76 or 79 that went to my brother. My dad pulled the trunk and front fairing and we ended up with a bracket to hold a round headlight, nobody ever knew what it was. He had that when I had my ninja, his was much more comfortable.
Everything on it is complicated. I have the repair manual but finding the time and motivation to figure out removing the hokin front fairing is going to be time consuming. In the spring I plan on flushing the fluid and putting some EBC pads on. Thing is a beast to stop in a hurry.
I have an 86 aspencade. Runs like a top, 138,000 miles and counting

Very cool bike, congrats! 80s and early 90s were the Japanese glory years, lots of cool stuff came out of there at that time. Enjoy the bike.
Gixxerjosh- any stator issues?
I rode it out to breakfast one morning and some guy practically pushed me off the bike to take the side cover off to "see if the stator had been fixed". Apparently they are notorious for dying. Right now I'm just riding it as is but he said the two wires coming off the stator were brittle and on their way out. They are brittle, but I was kind of thinking it would have quit before 32000 miles.

I'm waiting until I have a matching set of tires before I do any real riding. Thing has one radial and one bias ply right now.

I didn't take many pictures as I'm not very good at documenting stuff I did. I went through the bike, with help from friends, as best I could. New matching tires, EBC brake pads all around, stainless steel lines, brake fluid flush, new master cylinder, greased the final drive, put a voltmeter in the side fairing, new AGM battery plus tender leads, USB charger on the dash, oil change, removed lots of antiquated wiring that powered a bunch of stupid bolt on lights, painted a few surfaces that were rusty, tidied up lots of ugly grimy surfaces. Did a lot of basic maintenance items too that made a huge difference- fuel filter, air filter, oil change, spark plugs, new lines and clamps. The bike is running really nicely especially after the new fuel filter.
I took a chance on a Cyclops Adventure Sports H4 LED headlamp. I haven't ridden for a long duration at night, but riding around town the other night it appears as though I'll be pretty satisfied with it. Threw some new JBL speakers into the stock locations but I'm still waiting to find a good replacement for the stock radio. Ian helped me cut the old stator plug out repair those connections which was a huge help. Fit an air vent into the windscreen from a GL1800 to improve air flow which is non-existent behind that circus tent of a windscreen.
Right now she is loaded up and I leave for Orlando at 3am. Coming home via tail of the dragon and the blue ridge parkway.

I keep saying I am gonna get mine put back together. I have to do it this year. I took it apart for fork seals and steering stem bearing 3 years ago. 138,000 on wing and runs like a champ

Hell yes! I LOVE classic Wings stripped to the essentials like that.
Scarily, ST1100s can look good given the same treatment?!
I like the stripper!!
