    Shopping for helmets

I'm looking around for a new helmet as mine is old and it's time for a new one. I have seen some that are still Snell 2000. Should I avoid these as Snell 2005 seems to be more common at this point?

    Re: Shopping for helmets

I would not buy a helmet over 5 years old (with the Snell 2000 rating) The age of the helmet may compromise the integrity of the helmet.

As a helmet ages, the foam inside the shell starts to break down.

    Re: Shopping for helmets

what is your price range? there are some good helmets in the lower price range if you shop carefully and know what to look for. of course nothing compares to the fit, comfort, vents and light weight of a top of the line helmet, makes it easy to justify an Arai, Shoei, ect.

things to look for, in my opinion are,

    light weight.
    composite (not plastic shell).
vents that work and some sort of anti fog system.
    a removable liner is nice.
a shield mechanism that wont fall apart.
DOT and Snell 05 (duh) or euro equivilant.

but above all it must fit properly.

+1 500 isnt much money to invest in a helmet where you can land on your head from about 4 feet in the air and walk away to race the next day.

    Re: Shopping for helmets

I guess I don't have a price limit, although I would like to keep it around $300. I've been doing some research and checking the archives on here, reading reviews. My main question was about the Snell 2000 which I didn't think was a good idea because that's what my old one is. I was checking out Shoei, the ones on sale but I couldn't find any. I'm looking for silver and black.

In that case, Shark RSI. By far the best, and lightest, helmet I've seen in that price range.

    Re: Shopping for helmets

I just ordered one of these in silver last night. Price was $175 less than the dealers 'discounted price' yesterday (didnt have my size anyway). First time I had even tried on a Arai - hoping I'll be pretty happy with this one, it seemed to fit perfectly.

Call them, you'll be impressed with the price they give you

Make sure when you buy your new helmet that the born on date isn't that old either. You're paying for a helmet that is good for 5? years and if it's been sitting on a shelf for 2-3 years already, by the tag, it's only good for another 2-3 years.

Agreed. I had $100 knocked off the price of my Arai because it was almost a year old when I bought. Always try negotiating

www.motorcyclecloseouts.com has the Bell Star Recoil for $200 right now. I'd snag one but I already bought 2 helmets over the winter.

    I don't like Arai's shield mechanism.

AGV's are good helmets that don't get enough press and they are not that expensive. Reviews at www.sportbiketrackgear.com

I think HJC is a good less expensive helmet as long as you get the Composite and not the Polycarbonate ones.

    Re: Shopping for helmets

i bought an Arai RX7 Edwards replica helmet off a NESR member a month ago for $300. He wore it 5 times, and it's in mint condition. Turns out now, I dont need the helmet & i'm willing to sell it for what I paid for it. The helmet is a size medium, but I also purchased large head & cheek pads from seacoast for under $85. The helemt is dated 06/06, so you'll have a few years left on it. Let me know if you're interested.

From what I've read, if it's been boxed on a shelf away from heat and sunlight, aging is less of a concern. IIRC, ozone degrading the styrofoam is the biggest concern. I'm not sure that's true, tho...

But if you plan to race, there's a 5 year limit on helmets at NHMS regardless of condition.

It's the easiest shield change on the market once someone knowledgeable shows you how it works.

The one Arai I had I could figure it out all by myself.

The problem is they break and you have to buy new covers.

    My AGV is a snap.
