Anyone used Slime, or something like it for their tires? I may be riding to Atlanta this Thanksgiving, and something to prevent flats would be cool if there aren't any drawbacks.
Would any of you fill your tires with this if you were doing 1800 miles in two weeks?

I don't wanna be stuck with a flat in the middle of nowhere Virginia you know.

sounds like it could be a good idea i dont see it hurting anything
I wouldn't use that stuff. The next guy to change your tires will curse you left and right.
I'd carry this patch kit and a cell phone.
Ok, so here's the next question - assuming I don't get in any wrecks or anything, what would be cheaper: flying for roughly $300 round trip, or riding?
Gotta figure 200 in gas roughly, plus maintenance per mile gotta be 10-30 cents; all that minus food, lodging, mishaps, etc.
Am I right in thinking it'd be twice as cheap to fly (not as fun of course, but cheaper)?

I bought a kit, I haven't used the sealant yet, I bought the kit, for the compressor that comes with it, 4" x 3½" x 2", fits under my seat. I carry plugs & plug tools, also came with 16 oz or slime, enuf to do 1 car tire or 2 mitorcycle tires, with everything I have under the seat, oem tool kit, registration, insurance, scottoiler, autocom, auxillary fuseblock and a bank of relays, I don't have room for the sealant but I do have room for glugs & plug tools cause they can be stuffed into narrow areas
I been thinkin of getting a 8oz bottle, enuf to do 1 motorcycle tire and seeing if I can squeeze it in
I wouldn't put slime in as a preventative
I bought this kit at walmart for $15 or $16

I haven't used slime, but I run tubeless mt bike tires and it's standard procedure to put the liquid sealant in them as a preventative. It works in some situations, and doesn't make too much of a mess. Gravity and cetrifigul force keeps it mostly off the rim. I'd do it for a long trip on a MC
it would be more fun to ride, especially if you don't do it straight thru, you'd prolly have the blue ridge parkway all to yourself, I've done both, not directly to Atlanta but to areas just short, and beyond. Most were trips to deals gap
one time I took back roads all the way, but wouldn't recommend that to anybody, I would recommend hustling down to Front Royal the quickest route from your location, back roads aren't that great, and there are too many, towns, small cities, villages to contend with, you get nowhere slow.
travelling in November, you want heated gear, if you don't have it
ya, flying is probably cheaper, also a pain in the ass, I hate even going near airports, too much security for my tastes.

the guys down at the tire shop that i talked to said that stuff is corrosive and should just be used to help you get to where you are going and you are then supposed to get a new tire. i dont think you are supposed to use it until after the fact. i could be wrong though
Allegedly, I'm an expert rider cherry picking under a novice plate. Please don't look at my results when evaluating that statement...
Slime creates a horrible mess, and will be unable to fix problems that a patch kit can't mend. So... why cause the next guy to change your tires to hate you?
Thanks for all the advice guys. Looks like I'm flying.

Get the tire emergency spray can and just bring it with you. Liquid in tire derates tire 1 level for speed.

...regardless, I don't think I would use it as a 'preventitive'. That suggests that you would be putting it in before you really needed. I am of the school that says get a plug kit instead. (I just took a 2CT off my race bike that I plugged and ran 6 track days on. The tire was cooked but the plug worked perfectly! I'm a slow guy so there wasn't an real risk!)
