I threw my leg over a 08 750 for the first time and I did fine... right up until I totalled it...

I didn't mean it as a scare tactic and nobody had provided an actual event where a new rider trashed a brand new bike off the dealership floor. It was just meant to show that it does happen and really a..."be careful".
Ask him if he wants to have fun or be scared to death of the damn thing.
Next look up prices for fuel tanks ... $1300 sound right? Price of plastics? Parts are rare in salvage yards for Ducati's. You can find them but availbility is not like other bikes.
Insurance will cover it but his rates will go up.
Cheap jap bike like the SV, lots of parts available, mods like crazy and cheap to fix when broken.
Does he understand that he has to lay out some serious money for good gear?
Tools, will need stands, metric tools, Ducati dealers love seeing noobs come in for valve adjustments ... can he do the maintainence or will he just swipe plastic at the dealer?
Well off or not, he is looking at serious cash.

If loud pipes save lives, imagine what learning to ride would do.

My roomate thought it would be a good idea to buy a 07 Monster 1000 and totaled it and him self the 2nd day he rode because he got flustered when a car was coming faster then he tought while pulling out onto the main road. needles to say he wrecked into the curb across the street and lost a chunk of his calf.

During college I worked as a parts guy at a dealership. The record was 12 miles from brand new to junk - a 17 year old kid bought his first bike - a GS500. Less than an hour later we got a call to come pick it up. He wheelied it into a cinder block wall at the mall. Luckily he fell off the back before it hit.

For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction - and sometimes a scar...
I say let him get the bike he wants, but pressure to get a smaller one to learn on, too. If he is that loaded, he will probably end up wanting a track bike at some point anyway, so might as well get it now. Then, he can learn on the smaller bike while admiring the shiny new Hayden Duc in the garage, dreaming of when he will be ready to ride it. And then when he does, if he feels overwhelmed, he can go back to the smaller bike again and try the Duc when he is ready. Again. When he finds he is riding the Duc full time he can sell the 600 (and if he buys smart, probably for close to what he spent on it), or make it track-only.
Just make sure he takes some of his oodles of cash and gets decked out in appropriate gear. Skin can't be replaced.

I can resist everything but Pete's mom.
I vote for a tiered licensing system. It's the right thing to do for you friend.

I bought my Z1000 as my first bike...I had ridden a little bit before but nothing significant. Other than a practically stopped tip-over in my driveway a few weeks after I got it that hardly left a mark I've never had an issue.
Couple of points though, I don't ride like a grandma but I don't ride like an idiot either. I only ride with a few guys, and I respect their advice (they've been on bikes a lot longer than me) and I follow their lead.
The only time I've "ripped it up" is at Loudon, I never try to hit twisties on public roads and pretend to be Rossi, and I never rip around at 80+ mph in 40mph zones.
I've had some close calls with cars, but don't we all, they just don't notice us. The most important part is to be in control of the bike your riding. It may have a lot of power, but so long as you can control it, and know YOU and YOUR BIKE's limitations you'll be a lot safer. A bike like that will accelerate to 150mph in probably less than 10 seconds, but it will take it a lot longer to come to a controllable stop when someone pulls out in front of you.

DEAD MAN RIDING
I have known at least 60 people DEAD from bike riding. I think that50 of them were in their first two seasons.
Even a 500 will out accelerate any car he will see.
Girls only know Harleys any other thing is a Jap bike
Riders will just think he's a dumb assed poser
