There I was, enjoying my ride home from work last night...zipping down Rt 9 in lovely North Berwick, Maine. There wasn't much traffic, except for a small line of cars in the opposite lane. I don't know if the person didn't look or what, but one of the cars coming at me decides to take a left turn. I've had a bunch of close calls where someone cuts you off...you slam on your brakes and give them the bird. This was different. One of those cases where you are likely to slam into them broadside.
I don't know how I did it...it all happened so fast. I cranked on the front brake, locked up the rear (it was instinctual...I NEVER use my rear brake) and the back end started to come around. Let off the brakes for a split second to straighten up the bike and turn just a bit to miss the rear of the car. I still can't believe I missed the car. On the way to work this morning I slowed down to see the skid marks I left...A lot longer than I thought it would be.
Who's fault? Certaintly the car for turning right in front of me. Partly mine...I was going a good amount over the speed limit. It was dusk...dark enough to make visibility poor, but light enough that headlights don't stand out too much...although the headlight on the ZX9R is friggin bright. I tell ya, I was more scared than mad.
Be careful out there everyone...I was lucky last night.
