short version: pacing crazy dude in honda odyssey who was absolutely cruising, back off a bit for a known radar trap, no cop there so i go sort of catch up, pass another radar trap spot, look almost completely backwards (literally 175*) and up to my right over my shoulder, see cop parked on the side of an on-ramp that's blind to traffic driving past, think "shit", slow way down, he drives past me, snags minivan (who i don't think saw him whatsoever), and then walked into the middle of the highway and pointed at me as i rode past.

I thought I was screwed.
Then after checking my license he said... So what gear were you in? Second? I said yeah. He said whoa.. That 1098 is sick. I'm only giving you a warning because you're wearing all the right protective gear and you didn't make me chase you.

Pretty typical for a cop to note your actual speed if he's "giving you a break" on the ticket for exactly this reason. If/when you goto court they can make you face the full charge. If I had to guess I'd say its a way for the cop to try and prevent you from going to court at all so they can maximize their revenue.

Basically a masshighway worker can direct traffic for a LOT cheaper than a cop getting double overtime or whatever so the state/city is able to cut quite a bit of cost there.

I saw one on the news yesterday morning, a masshighway worker was directing traffic and there were about 50 off-duty cops with pickets harassing him and blocking traffic... that really pissed me off

yeah its complete BS - I'm happy they don't have em hanging around "directing traffic" and collecting a nice fat check on my dime

can you imagine if anyone pulled the stunts the off duty cops have been pulling without any penalties

Well fuck them. They got away with ripping us off for years on the highways (state cops I'm talking about) and now it's ending. Tough shit.

Town cops deserve to get detail. They aren't paid enough as it is. Staties should be paid the same as meter maids, because that's all they do, monitor traffic, drive at crazy speeds with impunity and collect revenue.

...and yeah, I got a 65 in a 55 on I93 a couple of weeks ago. Guess what? it also says 76 on the ticket because I "got a break".

I will be contesting it and I'll post the results up here for all to see, win or lose.

It should be about protecting and serving, not sitting in a cruiser asleep earning double time, or watching thousands of cars go by at 65 then picking one at random to collect tribute from.
