I'm hoping some of you have more insight into this than I.
I really want this bike: TigerTriple.com :: View topic - 2001 Tiger for sale.
Trouble is, its in Tennessee, and I dont have any time to go and look at and subsequently purchase, it. I'm a little nervous to just send the money, as I've had some bad luck making purchases on the the internet lately. Also, the only thing in the world I know about this guy is that he ended up getting booted off from Thumpertalk for selling someone a dirt shock that was not what it was supposed to be, and not refunding the money (or something to that effect - lets just say it wasn't a positive transaction.)
The bike is way cheap. Any suggestions as to how I might safely buy it?![]()
Get the seller to take the bike to his local Truimph dealer and have them check the bike out. Pay for my plane ticket down there. I ride it home. When I sold my 749 online I took it to BCM and had them check it out, they told the buyer the condition of the motorcycle.
do what Burnham says with this bike instead:

I've got to agree with everyone else here. Avoid that Tiger. Look for one on Cycletrader or eBay instead (such as this one: eBay Motors: Triumph : Tiger (item 260171000591 end time Oct-21-07 06:26:00 PDT)).

Hey, good find! I'll put that on my "watch list".
I think good judgment dictates that I take a pass on the white one in TN, as all of you have said. Best case scenario, I save a few bucks on the bike that I later lose shipping it, worse case I get fucked.
I did more riding at VIR this spring than I did for the entire rest of the year. Boo fuckin hoo. Guess I'll have to get to work making up for it for the rest of the fall with my new (old) KDX in the dirt.
Tigers are pretty tough bikes, just ask zombie (Mick). He has flogged his everywhere, including the track, since it was new and he just got back from riding it to Alaska with 40k+ on it.
I rode Mick's once, and I recommend them to anyone. They really can do it all - tear up the twisties, tour on the highway, commute, and if you want to, ride in the dirt. Plus, the 955 motor is unstoppable and makes lots of power.
Yo dude --I gave you a bike a year newer with the 955 engine instead of the 885, with half the miles for the same price. AND it's not ayellow. I have this 955 engine on my Sprint, (tuned up a little from the Tiger) and it rocks.
Ok, so the location is a problem. To crate a bike from there to here costs about $500, and then you have to decide whether or not to go look at it.
He paid $3500 for the thing a few months ago and decided it wasn't for him.
He's looking to get all his money back and it's not going to happen.
It doesn't come with bags or even a tank bag so hold out for something better
The thing about these bikes particularly the 01's is people who have them tend to hold onto them as the resale is shite and there a stonking good bike.
I have over 50k on mine and have yet to do a valve adjustment as they have been within specs since new
eat me
I'm just going to have to wait until I find one local enough to take for a ride, I'm too nervous about the long-distance purchase deal.![]()
Yeah, I'd be seriously tempted too if a 2001-2005 Tiger came on the market locally at a good price. I'm in the market for an "adventure touring" bike, but I'm 99% certain I'm just going to end up buying a V-Strom 650 in the spring. If you haven't ridden one, try to -- great bike, awesome in the twisties, comfortable, and it gets almost 60mpg. One of the guys I ride with bought one in August, and he loves it so much he's already put 9000 miles on it.

Ha, I'll have to wait and see on the dirt riding. My skills are a bit embarrassing -- on my street bike I'll scrape pegs in the twisties, but in the dirt I'm a n00b. How about a nice dual-sport ride in the meantime? Class 4 roads fit my dirt skill level a little better... and also my bike, which is a 650 with 50/50 tires on it.
As for competition on a Tiger... if one comes up locally, it's all yours. They're great bikes, but I'm going to go for the V-Strom for two reasons: much better gas mileage and much lower likelihood of costing me my license. Plus, if I'm going to be trusting it to carry me on long tours, I'd kind of like to buy a new bike and break it in myself.

*shrug*
I bought my first Ducati sight unseen from a chap in Colorado. Talked to him several times over the phone, and then wire-transferred the money. A week later a huge truck showed up and wheeled my bike off to me.
Maybe I'm just lucky? If you want it, go for it.
